字號(hào):

Now you’ll hear two long conversations.
    Conversation One
W:Hey, Joe, what’s all this talk about the benefit walkathon this weekend?
M:Don’t you know? Most of the residents in Packer Hall are going to try to walk the seven miles from the Engineering Library, across campus and down to the City Hall in an effort to raise money for the new children’s hospital.
W:Sounds like a good idea. But I don’t understand where the money comes from?
M:Well, a few days before the walkathon, each participant goes around, asking people to pledge a certain amount of money for each mile that he or she expects to walk in the event. Then after the walkathon is over the participants go back to the same people, collect the money pledged and send it into the hospital.
W:So you mean that someone pledges, say, a dollar a mile, and you walk five miles, you get five dollars?
M:That’s right. Of course, most of my friends aren’t such big spenders. The biggest pledge I’ve gotten so far is twenty-five cents a mile.
W:And how many people have made pledges for you?
M:Eleven, so far. Hey, how about making it even a dozen?
W:Sure, if you’ll do the same for me. The walkathon sounds like a perfect opportunity for me to break in my new pair of sports shoes.

W:In just three weeks, and I am excited! But there are still a few things I need to do before I go.
    M: Like what?
W:Like renewing my passport, going to the travel agency to buy my plane tickets, and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I’m gone.
M: You are not going to give it up, are you?
W:No way! I’ll never find another apartment around here. But I don’t like the idea of paying a threemonth rent on an empty apartment, either.
M:I don’t blame you. Perhaps you could sublet it.
    W: Yes, but who to?
M:Hm, let me think. Oh, I know just a person. A colleague of mine Jim Thomas is coming here to do some research this summer from June to August.
W:Well, that’s exactly when I’ll be away! It sounds ideal, as long as the landlord agrees!
M:Tell you what; I’ll be calling Jim late this week anyway, so I’ll mention it to him then.
W:Well, thanks, Bill. Let me know what happens. That extra money would really come in handy.

    Section B
    Passage One
When a sleepy driver has trouble in keeping his eyes on the road and gets too close to another car, an alarm sound will warn the driver. If nothing is done, the car will automatically come to a stop and in this way prevent an accident. This is a new device which will soon be tested in an experimental car in Japan. The computer warning system keeps track of a driver’s condition by monitoring his heart beat with signals transmitted from a band round his wrist. The wrist band records the driver’s pulse which measures the heat beat. Each pulse in the wrist sends a signal to the computer. By analyzing the pulse rate, the computer can determine whether a driver is drunk, sleeping or ill. Devices in other parts of the car can also tell the computer if the car is too close to another vehicle or is moving dangerously. The computer will sound the alarm when a problem arises, and will automatically stop the car if the driver ignores the warning.
Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

    Passage Two
Men have traveled ever since they first appeared on the earth. In primitive times they did not travel for pleasure but to find new places where their herds could feed, or to escape from hostile neighbors, or to find more favorable climates. They traveled on foot. Their journeys were long, tiring, and often dangerous.
Being intelligent and creative, they soon discovered easier ways of traveling. They rode on the backs of their domesticated animals; they hollowed out tree trunks and, by using bits of wood as paddles, were able to travel across water. Later they traveled, not from necessity, but for the joy and excitement of seeing and experiencing new things. This is still the main reason why we travel today.
Scientists have invented machines that can explore outer space. Eventually there will be cheap day excursions to the moon and honeymoons on Venus. People will be able to fly from one planet to another in nasty little arrowshaped tubes. I say “people” because I have no intention of being one of them.
Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.
29.Which of the following is not the reason for men in primitive times to travel?
In primitive times they did not travel for pleasure but to find new places where their herds could feed, or to escape from hostile neighbors, or to find more favorable climates.(在原始社會(huì),人們旅行不是為了享受快樂,而是為了給他們的牛羊找到新牧場(chǎng),逃離不和睦的鄰居,或者找到氣候條件更好的地方。)
30.What made it easier for men to travel later?
Being intelligent and creative, they soon discovered easier ways of traveling. They rode on the backs of their domesticated animals; they hollowed out tree trunks and, by using bits of wood as paddles, were able to travel across water.(他們富有智慧和創(chuàng)造力,很快就發(fā)現(xiàn)了更便捷的旅行方式。
