fight against climate change

As a rapidly developing nation with a huge population, China is in a unique position to fight global warming, both at home and abroad. The Foreign Ministry has clarified China's stance on the global fight against climate change.
It's another bright, clear day in Beijing. China's trying to achieve more days with skies like these. And it's trying to persuade other countries to join in the fight against climate change.
Yu Qingtai, chief negotiator of Office of Climate change, Foreign Ministry, said, "President Hu Jintao proposed four principles on climate change at the recent G8 Summit. He suggests the global community respond to climate change through cooperation and stick to sustainable development. He also proposes using the UN Climate Change Framework as a guide and to promote scientific and technological innovation. We're determined to make necessary efforts to deal with the matter."
The global community has agreed that countries must share the responsibility of dealing with climate change, and the biggest polluters should do the most.
Statistics show that in 2004, greenhouse gas emission in developed countries reached 16.1 tons per person, almost four times that of developing countries.
The Kyoto Protocol sets a standard for industrialized nations to reduce emissions between 2008 to 2012, but China has been working towards more immediate results.
The use of renewable resources and clean energy has helped the country save the equivalent of eight hundred million tons of coal, reducing 1.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide in the past 15 years.
China has been cooperating and negotiating with the US, the EU, Japan, UK, Canada and many other countries to deal with climate change.
