1．Tear有“眼淚、流淚”又有“撕碎、碎片”的意思，大家要根據(jù)句子背景理解。
（1）表示“眼淚”，如：
The hot tears welled up in her eyes.
熱淚涌上她的眼眶。
（2）表示“流淚、含淚”，如：
A grain of sand made my right eye tear.
一粒沙子弄得我右眼淌淚。
（3）表示“撕開、劃破”，如：
She tore the letter into tiny pieces.
她把信撕得粉碎。
Tear up是固定短語(yǔ)，意思是“撕破、撕碎”，如：
She tore up the letter and threw it into the waste basket.
她撕碎了信,把它扔在廢紙簍里。
2．In vain短語(yǔ)，意思是“徒勞”，放在系動(dòng)詞或動(dòng)詞后面，比如：
Their efforts were not in vain.
他們的努力沒(méi)白費(fèi)。
The police tried in vain to break up the protest crowds.
警察企圖驅(qū)散*的人群,但沒(méi)有成功。
