Proper：當(dāng)否？
在葬禮（funeral）上神情嚴(yán)肅（look grave)，是proper behavior（合適的行為）；在婚禮（wedding ceremony）上哭泣(sob, cry, weep)，如同發(fā)言中跟領(lǐng)導(dǎo)作對（contradict a leader），都是improper behavior(不得體的行為)。
可能不那么容易看出，appropriate是穿馬甲版的proper：把兩個(gè)詞中間對齊看一下會有發(fā)現(xiàn)相似之處（similarity）。
在婚禮上講笑話（tell jokes）是appropriate behavior，在葬禮上搞笑（be funny）是inappropriate behavior。
還有一個(gè)長得像的可能純屬巧合(by sheer accident): property，主要意思之一為“財(cái)產(chǎn)”。
比如中國人總是說（tend to say)公有財(cái)產(chǎn)神圣不可侵犯，我們可能有此一問：
Is it proper only to say that public property is sacred? Then how about private property?
光說公有財(cái)產(chǎn)神圣不可侵犯，這合適嗎？那私有財(cái)產(chǎn)又當(dāng)如何？
在改革開放幾十年后的今天（decades after the beginning of the reform and opening policy)，這一問不但是合理的（rational, reasonable)，而且是相當(dāng)急迫的（rather urgent)?！?BR> Technology：科技
時(shí)下最時(shí)髦（fashionable)的行當(dāng)(trade, profession, occupation, job)之一，是IT業(yè)，information technology(信息技術(shù)）之謂也。
鄧小平爺爺曾教導(dǎo)我們：Science and Technology is the first productivity.(科學(xué)技術(shù)是第一生產(chǎn)力)。
于是（in response, accordingly, consequently, as a result, therefore），全國各地（all over the country），一批又一批High-tech enterprises（高科技企業(yè)）涌現(xiàn)出來（mushroom, spring up, come out）。
可事實(shí)上（in fact, indeed, actually），從技術(shù)上講(technically)，這些所謂的high-tech enterprises技術(shù)含量可疑(suspicious)，真的當(dāng)然也存在(exist)，但為數(shù)不少是強(qiáng)裝時(shí)髦(pretend to be fashionable)。
Tend：傾向表現(xiàn)為往往
Peope tend to suspect a pioneer.
對于提出新觀念的人（說得好聽點(diǎn)叫先行者pioneer），人們先傾向于懷疑。
也可以說：人們往往懷疑先行者。
一種“傾向”表現(xiàn)為“往往”干什么。
注：這可不是為舉例而舉例（not take an example for example’s sake），群眾對權(quán)威的迷信（superstition for authority），常有礙于(tend to hold back)對新事物的接受。
YOS tends to challeng authority.
老鞋傾向于挑戰(zhàn)權(quán)威。
老鞋總是挑戰(zhàn)權(quán)威。
前者（the former）似乎還不如后者(the latter)自然。
My tendency to challenge authority is obvious.
我挑戰(zhàn)權(quán)威的傾向是明顯的。
大家可以看得出來。
值得一提的是trend，至少表面上看來是親戚（apparently related at least）。長得像，意思也近。
It is a new international trend to challenge authority.
挑戰(zhàn)權(quán)威是一種新的國際趨勢。
注：顯然（obviously），這個(gè)是只是舉例而已，或者是為自我安慰（for the sake of self-comfort）。
不得不說intend。
當(dāng)老鞋challenge authority的時(shí)候，不小心把要緊的人物給惹怒（irritate or enrage some VIP)，可能會說：
I didn't intend to offend you; I only meant to state the truth.
哈哈，俺不是有意要冒犯您；俺不過是想陳述一下事實(shí)。
對啊，intend to do跟mean to do差不多就是圖謀或打算做某事。
字面上，in(里面/內(nèi)心），tend(傾向），還好理解吧？
再到名詞intention, 形容詞intentional, 乃至副詞intentionally, 看起來很酷，實(shí)際上也就簡單了。
I did not have the intention to offend you.
我無意冒犯你。
My offensive remarks were by no means intentional.
我的言論若有冒犯，絕非故意。
I didn't make the remarks intentionally.
我有此言論，并非故意。
那看來還要收拾extend。
ex與in正好相反，所以動(dòng)作方向也就反了。
比如領(lǐng)導(dǎo)跟老鞋強(qiáng)調(diào)道：
The negative influence of your remarks will extend farther and farther.
是說：你這廝言論的負(fù)面影響，將擴(kuò)展得越來越深遠(yuǎn)。
擴(kuò)展，當(dāng)然是向外。
擴(kuò)展到哪一步？那是個(gè)程度（extent)問題。
領(lǐng)導(dǎo)繼續(xù)說：
The influence may develop to the extent that my position be threatened.
影響可能會發(fā)展到我的位置受到威脅的程度。
擴(kuò)展的結(jié)果，是范圍廣大(extensive)。
領(lǐng)導(dǎo)總結(jié)陳詞：
It does not take extensive knowledge to realize that the influence may really extend to such an extent.
認(rèn)識到影響確實(shí)可能會擴(kuò)展到如此程度，并不需要什么廣博的知識。
