older，elder
這兩個詞都是形容詞old的比較級，但詞義和用法有所不同。
（一）older專指年齡的大小而言，既可用于一個家庭成員之間，又可用于非同一家庭成員之間；elder專用于同一個家庭成員之間的比較，有時用作轉(zhuǎn)義，指職位、身份較高的人。例：
He is older than his brother．
他比他的兄弟年長。
Mr．Chen is older than I by two years．
陳先生比我大兩年。
Tom is my elder brother．
湯姆是我的哥哥。
My elder brother is twelve years older than I．
我的哥哥比我大十二歲。
You are all elder statesmen．
你們都是政治元老/資深政客?？荚嚧?BR> Tom，you should be humble enough．They are all our elders．
湯姆，你要謙虛些，他們都是我們的長輩。
（二）older只能用作形容詞，常與than連用；elder 既可作形容詞，又可作名詞，它決不能和than連用（例句見上）。
（三）在美國，“哥哥”、“姐姐”有人用older brother 和older sister，而不用elder brother（sister）。

She is the older of the two．（錯）
She is the elder of the two．（對）
