pence，pennles
這兩個(gè)詞都是penny（便士）的復(fù)數(shù)形式，但涵義和使用場(chǎng)合并不相同。
（一） pence指數(shù)額而言； pennies指一個(gè)個(gè)具體的硬幣。
（二）在英國(guó)，penny是“便士”，等于0.01英鎊，一九七一年二月十五日以前，一便士=1／12先令=1／240英鎊；在美國(guó)，penny是“一分幣（a cent）。penny 的比喻義指很少或微不足道的數(shù)目，所以“Not a penny．”指一點(diǎn)也沒(méi)有。
請(qǐng)看數(shù)例：
Twenty－four old pence is epual to two shillings
二十四舊便士等于二先令。
It cost two shillings eight pence．
它的售價(jià)是二先令八便士。
Please give me six pennies.
請(qǐng)給我六個(gè)便士（指六個(gè)硬幣）。

Penny的讀音也是值得注意的。twopence讀／’t)p+ns／； twopenny讀／’t)p+ni／。
表示數(shù)額時(shí)，從二便士到十一便士，要將數(shù)目字和pence連寫(xiě)，例如twoepence、threepence、fourpence等。此外，還有一個(gè)“二十便士”也要連寫(xiě)： twentypence，其他則分寫(xiě)。例如twelvepence、thirteen pence……。
Threepence讀作／’Irep+ns／，也可以讀作／Irip+ns／；threepenny也是如此，但halfpence和halfpenny卻只可以讀作／’heip+ns和／’heip+ni／。也許是penny太不值錢(qián)了，難怪英美人都說(shuō)：“／’heip+ni／”，諧音“hate penny”，這是筆者說(shuō)的笑話，請(qǐng)莫當(dāng)真。
