翻譯國外學術(shù)文獻不免要碰到一個術(shù)語問題。這里要談到的是：英語"the social sciences"與漢語“社會科學”是否對應(yīng)，或者說是否可以把"（the） social science（s）“譯成”社會科學“或把后者譯如，《新英漢詞典》將"the social sciences"譯做”（各門）社會科學“；《漢英詞典》則將”社會科學“譯做”social sciences".看來，兩者同義，該是毋庸置疑的了吧。
但是，漢語“社會科學”是指什么；英語“（the）social science（s）”又是指什么，這是需要加以明確的。
按《現(xiàn)代漢語詞典》，“社會科學”乃是“研究各種社會現(xiàn)象的科學，包括教育學、政治經(jīng)濟學、法律學、歷史學、文藝學、美學等。社會科學屬于上層建筑范圍，有強烈的階級性?！?979年版《辭?！返尼屃x亦與此大體相同，只是去掉了“美學”，加上了“語言學”、“民族學”、“宗教學”和“社會學”，把“政治經(jīng)濟學”改為“政治學”和“經(jīng)濟學”罷了。
但按W3即《韋氏國際詞典》（三版），則英語"social science"有兩個含義：
（1）以人類社會的制度和功能及以社會成員間相互關(guān)系為研究對象的科學諸部門（the branches of science that deal with the institutions and functioning of human society and with interpersonalrelations of individuals or members of society）；
（2）以人類社會某一特定方面為其研究對象的科學（如經(jīng)濟學或政治學）（science[as economics or political science）dealing with a particular phase or aspect of human society）。
兩相比較，漢語“社會科學”的含義顯然比英語"social science為廣。但兩者的區(qū)別遠不止此：
據(jù)同上韋氏詞典，英語中還有一個區(qū)別于"social science"的概念。"behavioral science"，即“行為科學”，并舉了“心理學”、“社會學”和“人類學”為例；而如眾所周知，這三門學科都是直接包括在漢語的“社會科學”之內(nèi)的。
筆者還曾在美國<時代）周刊上讀到過一段記載——哈佛大學的一位已故校長早在1945年的講話中就談到：一個大學畢業(yè)生必須修完三大學科的課程，這三大學科便是“natural sciences"，”socialsciences"和"humanities".請看原文：
The late Harvard president·。·in a 1945 report entitied“General Education in s Free Society”，maintained that an educated graduate must complete courses in three broad categories——the natural sciences，the social sciences and the humanities.
——Time，March 27，1978，p.40
在英語中把“humanities"等等同”social sciences"相提并論的情況是比較常見的，足以證實上引哈佛大學某較長的看法有其一般性：
Degrees are offered in humnities，behavioral and social sciences.
——Time，September 15，1980，p.60
Some of the biggest Of these worker and peasant colleges offer full university-level programs in scientific and technical fields as well as the social sciences，humanities，and fine arts.
——New China，Winter 1978，p.19
由此可見，漢語“社會科學”僅僅同“自然科學”相提并論；而英語"the social sciences"，則不但同“自然科學”而且也同“人文科學即”the humanities“等等相提并論的。這也就是說”the social sciences"不僅不包括“自然科學”而且至少也不包括“the humanities"乃至"fine arts"在內(nèi)。
那么"the humanities'，指的究竟是什么呢？據(jù)1975年美國蘭登出版社<大學詞典），此詞共有兩義：
（1） 古典拉丁與希臘的語言和文學（the study of classical Latinand Greek language and literature）；
（2） 區(qū)別于“科學”的“文學”、“哲學”、“藝術(shù)”等等（literature，philosophy，art，etc.，as distinguished from the sciences）。
可見，按（現(xiàn)代漢語詞典）屬“社會科學”的“文學”、“藝術(shù)”等等都不但不屬于"social sciences"，而且根本就不在"sciences"這一范疇之內(nèi)。
當然，英美的英語辭書很多，各家所述也未必一致（這里就不多說了），故于譯事之余略為之記，提出來供大家討論，以期引出更多的資料來對此予以肯定、否定或修正，來共同理清這筆糊涂賬
