    Part VI:快速閱讀
    Unexpected(料想不到的) Gift
There was a kindly(和善的)nobleman(貴族)whose wife had died of illness, leaving the nobleman and his three daughters in despair(處于絕望中). After losing all his money in useless and bad inventions(發(fā)明), the family had to move into a peasant’s(佃農(nóng)) cottage(農(nóng)舍), where the daughters did their own cooking, sewing(做針線活)and cleaning. When the time came for the daughters to marry, the father became even more depressed(抑郁的)as his daughters could not marry without dowries(嫁妝), money and property(財(cái)產(chǎn))given to the new husbands’ families. One night, after the daughters had washed out(洗完)their clothes, they hung their stockings over the fireplace(壁爐)to dry. That night Saint Nicholas, knowing the despair of the father, stopped by the nobleman’s house. Looking in the window, Saint Nicholas saw that the family had gone to bed. He also noticed the daughters’ stockings. Inspiration(智慧的火花)struck Saint Nicholas and he took three small bags of gold from his pouch(袋子)and threw them one by one down the chimney(煙囪), and they fell into the stockings. The next morning, when the daughters awoke(醒來(lái)), they found that their stockings contained enough gold for them to get married. The nobleman was able to see his three daughters marry and lived a long and happy life.(Examda.com)
