今天我們要給大家介紹和船有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語: To shape up or ship out. To shape up or ship out，我們先來看前面一半 to shape up. To shape up 的意思是改進你的工作或行為。后面一半 to ship out 就是離開一個地方。把前后兩部份合在一起 to shape up or ship out 就成了一個俗語,意思是:要就改進你的工作,否則就離開這兒。美國的陸軍里經(jīng)常用這個俗語。下面這個例子是一個陸軍中士在訓(xùn)斥一個二等兵。
"Jones, you are without a doubt the worst soldier in the whole company! Your uniform looks like you slept in it! Your rifle is always dirty, and you can’t follow a simple order! I’m telling you, soldier -- either shape up or ship out, you hear me!"
這個中士很嚴厲,他說:「瓊斯,毫無疑問你是整個連隊里最糟糕的兵。你的制服皺得好像睡衣似的,你的槍支老那末臟,你連簡單的命令都不能執(zhí)行。我告訴你,你要就做出改進,否則就請你走路,懂嗎!」
我們上面說 to shape up or ship out 這個俗語在陸軍里用的比較多,但是在日常生活中也可能出現(xiàn)的。例如,一個公司的老板對手下一個雇員說:
"Mary, you often come late in the morning and leave early in the evening, and you are always on the phone talking to your friends. This is not acceptable here. I’m now giving you a last chance, either shape up or ship out. "
這個老板說:「瑪麗,你經(jīng)常早上遲到,晚上早退,你還老和朋友在電話上聊天。這種表現(xiàn)在這里是不能接受的。我現(xiàn)在給你一個最后的機會,要就改進你的表現(xiàn),否則你就離開這里。」
這里要指出的是許多美國人工作很緊張,生活的節(jié)奏也很快。如果有人遲到早退,又不好好專心工作的話,很有可能會被解雇。但是像這個例句里說的這種人確實存在,這也是為什么有些人難以在一個公司長期工作的原因,因為他們到哪里都不受歡迎。
