Australia Day is the day we acknowledge the bonds that unite us， the day we celebrate our diversity and the day we recognise that we share a common future.
Australia is united by important values - a commitment to our nation， its democratic institutions and laws and a sense of a “fair go for all”。 Australians are a deeply patriotic people which we express in our own unique way. We celebrate our diversity because we all have different origins， ideas， aspirations， cultural attitudes and political beliefs. This is how we learn from each other and grow together.
But we also recognise our commonality. At the core of what it means to be Australian is our commitment to helping others， in good times and hard times. We have been tested as a nation over the past year， by drought and bushfires and most tragically， the recent acts of terrorism in Bali. Throughout this time， I have been truly inspired by the Australian spirit with its strength， its resilience and its vitality. Australians have responded as always， with compassion and commitment. Such events sadden us， but they also strengthen our resolve to remain caring， open， tolerant and free people.
This great land of ours holds a special and a profound place in us all. We demonstrate our national pride in thousands of community events across the country， to celebrate what it means to be Australian and to think about how to make Australia an even better place for the generations to come.
