    “Not the brightest bulb”按字面直譯是“并非最亮的燈泡 ”,但它實際的意思可能很少有人猜到——就是“笨”。
“Not the brightest bulb”其實只是個縮略短語,其完整形式常見的有“not the brightest bulb in the box / on the tree / in the chandelier”。“In the box”里的“box”指裝燈泡的盒子:“on the tree”里的“tree”指圣誕樹(上面有很多小飾物與彩燈):“in the chandelier”里的“chandelier”指豪華吊燈。
日常運用中可直接拿“not the brightest bulb”來形容比較笨的人,如“Kevin is kind and good-natured, but he is really not the brightest bulb.”(凱文為人善良溫厚,但他實在算不上聰明。)但更常見的語境是某人說了愚蠢的話或做了愚蠢的事后,見證人來一句“You are not the brightest bulb, are you?”。
Question: If you could live forever, would you and why?
Answer of Heather Whitestone: I would not live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were supposed to live forever, then we would live forever. But we can not live forever, which is why I would not live forever.
Audience in front of the TV: She's not the brightest bulb, is she?
Brooke Shields: Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life.(吸煙會害死人。
You: She's not the brightest bulb, is she?(她還真不算怎么聰明,是吧。)
Al Gore: It isn't pollution that is harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.(污染并沒有損害環(huán)境,是空氣和水里的雜質(zhì)在破壞環(huán)境。)
You: He's not the brightest bulb, is he?(他還真不怎么聰明,是吧?)
它們的完整形式分別是“not the sharpest the knife in the cabinet / not the sharpest pencil in the box / not the brightest crayon in the box”。
