如果你被夾在大石塊和很難邁步的一個(gè)地方之間，你有什么感覺呢？進(jìn)退兩難，不知如何是好吧. Between a rock and a hard place用在需要在相等或相互排斥的選擇物之間進(jìn)行選擇的處境，而往往這兩種選擇都不是令人滿意的。比如說：I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. If I go with Isobel, it'll be much more expensive and if I go with Julie, Isobel probably won't speak to me again. 這就叫做“between a rock and a hard place”, 也就是漢語的進(jìn)退兩難、進(jìn)退維谷、左右為難等等。其實(shí)“dilemma ”有時(shí)就能夠代替這個(gè)慣用語，上面的例句就可以說I'm caught in a delemma… 除了常和be caught連用，還可以同be stuck搭配，e.g. I'd like to help you but I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.（我不是不想幫你，我也很為難呀）
