最近，有網(wǎng)友對有關(guān)專家在評論公示語翻譯錯誤現(xiàn)象的時候?qū)ⅰ把劭漆t(yī)院”英譯為eye hospital作為一個錯誤事例進行批評提出了質(zhì)疑，認為“眼科醫(yī)院”的英譯采用eye hospital是完全可以的，而并不一定要翻譯成ophthalmology hospital.對此，筆者的看法是，“眼科醫(yī)院”英譯為eye hospital是完全可以的，而ophthalmology hospital則顯得更加專業(yè)一些。在功能強大的搜索引擎Google上進行檢索的結(jié)果是，西方國家，尤其是英國國家確實大量使用eye hospital這一說法，如Manchester Royal Eye Hospital，The Sydney Eye Hospital.
Manchester Royal Eye Hospital主頁的自我介紹中也多次出現(xiàn)Eye Hospital：Manchester Royal Eye Hospital operates as the Ophthalmic Division within the Trust. Nationally， it is the second largest provincial postgraduate ophthalmic teaching hospital—— Moorfields Eye Hospital in London being the first. 該醫(yī)院主頁還有一張該院大樓的圖片，大樓正前方一目了然地寫著Royal Eye Hospital.與我們更接近的事例出現(xiàn)在香港，香港眼科醫(yī)院也采用了eye hospital這一說法，該醫(yī)院的主頁中的自我介紹是這樣的：Opened in 1992， the Hong Kong Eye Hospital replaced the Yaumatei Eye Centre as a secondary and tertiary eye referral centre. It occupies a total floor area of 13，065 square metres with a staff force of 230.的“奧比斯飛行眼科醫(yī)院”的英文也是ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital.
至此，我們也許可以說，eye hospital是完全可以接受的一個表達，因為既然英語國家和地區(qū)普遍認可，我們沒有理由就否定它，被廣泛認可的表達就是可接受的表達，完全符合英語文體的可接受性（accept ability）原則。它應該是一個比較通俗的說法，可能是考慮到民眾的受教育水平程度不一，而ophthalmology這個單詞又非常專業(yè)，無論是拼寫、讀音還是辨別都比較困難，這也許就是相關(guān)醫(yī)院采用eye hospital的原因。ophthalmology hospital則非常專業(yè)，因為ophthalmology 就是一個純醫(yī)學專業(yè)的詞匯，比如說，香港眼科醫(yī)院在主頁介紹中也提到The Academic Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is integrated with the Hospital's clinical service.這就表明，在作為一個學術(shù)研究范疇的時候，ophthalmology無疑是選擇。
