“社團”、“社會”的翻譯

Society 與community 有人問，國際社會能否翻譯為“international society”。的確，在英文中表示“社會”的有“society”和“community”，但“國際社會”應(yīng)該翻譯為“international community ”或“community of nations”。 Society與community同源自拉丁文，皆指社會，雖然如此，二者在用法上仍有差別。
    Society指
    （1）社會，如西方社會（Western society）;
    （2） 社會階層，如高收入階層（a high income society）；
    （3）上流社會，社交界，如當?shù)氐纳狭魃鐣╝ local society）；
    （4）交往，如樂于與鄰居交往（enjoy the society of one's neighbors）；
    （5） 總稱的朋友，伴侶，如有許多朋友（have plenty of society ）；
    （6） 社團，會社，學會，如辯論社（a debating society）;
    （7） 動植物的小群落，如黃蜂窩（a society of wasps）。
    Community指
    （1）社會或社區(qū)，特指由同住一地區(qū)或一國的人所構(gòu)成的社會或社區(qū)，如紐約的華僑社會（the Chinese community in New York）；
    （2）團體，界，如工商界（business community）；
    （3）公眾，如社會貧困階層（the poorer classes of community）；
    （4）國家間的共同體，如歐洲防務(wù)共同體（European Defense Community）；
    （5）共有，共享，共同責任，如貨物的共有（the community of goods）；
    （6）共同性，一致，相同，如利益的一致（the community of interests）。
    由此可見，這兩個詞雖然相似，但仍有一些區(qū)別：
    1. 表示國際社會用“community”
    2. 表示國內(nèi)社會或上流社會，用“society”。例如“society page”是社交新聞版，“society woman”是上流社會的女子。
    3. 表示社區(qū)，即國內(nèi)社會中的較小單位，用“community ”。例如“community page” 是社區(qū)新聞版，“community leader”是社區(qū)領(lǐng)導。
    4. 表示社團，用“society”。
    5. 其他如共同天線（antenna ），團體精神（spirit community）則都用“community” 當這兩個詞做形容詞時，尤可看出之間的差別，因此使用時要格外小心。
