攻讀碩士學(xué)位研究生英語入學(xué)考試中的短文寫作旨在測試考生用英語表達(dá)思想的能力。考生應(yīng)根據(jù)要求(命題、提綱、主題句、圖表、規(guī)定情況等),在40分鐘內(nèi)寫出120~150詞的短文。短文應(yīng)內(nèi)容切題,表達(dá)清楚,意義連貫,語言正確。
此外,研究生英語入學(xué)考試的作文題材一般都與日常生活和常識(shí)有關(guān)。這既是對考生的要求,又是作文命題的依據(jù)。盡管作文內(nèi)容涉及面較廣,但都源于日常生活和一般常識(shí),而日常生活和一般常識(shí)涉及方方面面,都為作文命題提供了大量素材??紤]到考生的外語水平和知識(shí)面,以及實(shí)際寫作能力和寫作興趣,這種作文題一般都貼近生活、主題明顯、易于把握、可寫性強(qiáng)。縱觀近幾年來的作文題,就能作出這種判斷。例如1993年作文題目是“Advertisement on TV”,1994年是“On Making Friends”,1995年是“The Hope Project”,1996年是“Good Health”,1997年是“Tobacco Consumption:Good or Bad?”
應(yīng)該說這樣的作文題并不刁難。但有些考生得到作文題后,不善于利用提綱、主題句、圖表等弄清命題者的意圖,往往感到茫然不知所措,寫出的作文思路狹窄,抓住某些枝節(jié)反復(fù)贅述。對內(nèi)容挖掘不深,或文不對題。因此,筆者就淺析一篇短文的寫作過程,供準(zhǔn)備應(yīng)考者參考。

首先,審題:本題是控制性寫作(controlled writing),屬于說明文。與常識(shí)和日常生活有關(guān):健康是人生最重要的財(cái)富,健康的身體是事業(yè)成功的保障,保持健康的方法以及你自己的保健措施。短文應(yīng)緊扣這個(gè)中心思想,提綱則規(guī)定了作文的范圍。
其次,構(gòu)思:本文應(yīng)按提綱要求進(jìn)行寫作,分三段敘述,即引言(introduction)、正文(body)和結(jié)尾(conclusion)。
1.引言。引言應(yīng)開門見山說明本文主題。我們可以根據(jù)段首句 The desire for good health is universal,以及提綱的第一條,寫出健康的重要性。這是本文的中心議題。
2.正文。正文是短文的主體,是需要說明或議論的重點(diǎn),通常應(yīng)占短文較大篇幅。命題者給出的提綱是 Ways to keep fit,要求寫出保持健康的方法。此時(shí),考生應(yīng)拓寬思路,從幾個(gè)方面層層敘述,條理清楚,層次分明。從內(nèi)容來說,應(yīng)注意防止片面性,健康并不只意味著鍛煉身體,還應(yīng)包括勞逸結(jié)合,去掉不良生活習(xí)慣,注意身心健康、飲食、休息等。
3.結(jié)尾。結(jié)尾是總結(jié)全文,但又要達(dá)到加深題意的目的。文章的結(jié)尾高妙與否,直接關(guān)涉整篇文章的高下優(yōu)劣,因此要認(rèn)真寫好。命題者要求說出 My own practices,考生就應(yīng)結(jié)合自己的實(shí)際,闡述自己的健身之道,譬如用生活規(guī)律有序、適當(dāng)參加體育鍛煉等說明自己的 practices,進(jìn)而總結(jié)主題。
寫作這樣的短文,有幾點(diǎn)值得注意。第一,進(jìn)行構(gòu)思后,考生可圍繞主題,選擇自己熟悉的詞語和句型進(jìn)行寫作,切莫臨場生拼硬造。由于受時(shí)間和字?jǐn)?shù)的制約,考生可根據(jù)提綱的引導(dǎo),開門見山,單刀直入,提出主題,然后逐一闡述。第二,在闡述某一觀點(diǎn)時(shí),進(jìn)行正反兩方面的對比,這是挖掘?qū)懽鲀?nèi)容的好方法。譬如談到健康的樂趣時(shí),又從反面闡明不健康的后果。這樣,文章內(nèi)容便能得到深化,更具有說明力。第三,根據(jù)自己闡述的需要,選用一些轉(zhuǎn)折詞語,如 however, therefore;in the first place,the last but not the least等,承上啟下,使文章連貫,說服有力,條理清晰,結(jié)構(gòu)完整,文意貫通。下面的短文為本題的參考范文。
Good Health
The desire for good health is universal.As a popular saying goes,“Health is better than wealth.”Good health enables one to seek after his goal in the career he pursues and make contributions to society. Only in good health can one taste the sweetness and happiness of a comfortable life.Poor health,however,discourages one from facing the challenging life in a competitive society. Therefore,health is of great importance to everyone.
There are several ways,in my opinion,to build up one's health. In the first place, those who are as busy as bees should find time for relaxation, because too much stress results in ill health.Secondly,to keep fit,one must get rid of the habits that damage his health.Thirdly,it is beneficial to one's health to have a balanced diet, enough sleep and regular physical exercise. The last but not the least important way to maintain good health is to be broad-minded;otherwise,a heavy heart will wear away his health.
Personally,I like taking a brisk walk in the evening,which does a lot of good to my health.In music,I immerse myself as I feel strained. With a routine,I fulfil my work and study.

Good Health
