Dialogue 6
    EXPECTING A PHONE CALL
Laurance-Was i hat the telephone ringing?
    Soony- I didn't hear anything.
Laurance-I thought I heard it ring two or three times.
Soony- Sometimes when the windows are open, you can
    hear the neighbors' phone.
Laurance-Well, I'm expecting an important phone call, and
I don't want to miss it.
Soony- Is it anything I should know about?
Laurance-Not really. It has something to do with work and
doesn't really affect us here at home.
Soony- Well, why don't you go ahead and do what you wanted
to do outside. I'll call you if the phone rings for you.
Laurance-Thanks. I think I will. I've been waiting so long
now I'm getting nervous. I need to relax outdoors.
    1. Not really.= It is not really anything you should know about.
    2. have something to do with work:與工作有關(guān).這是個常用句型.have 動詞之后可用nothing,something,anything也可用a lot,agreat deal,little等詞替換.
    3. waiting so long now(that)I'm getting nervous:口語中so...that結(jié)構(gòu)中的that常省略.

    Dialogue 7
    WHY DIDN'T CALL US?
    Laurance-When did you get here?
Soony- Just a few minutes ago.
Ikea- We've been waiting for almost an hour.
Soony- I'm sorry, but I had car trouble--a flat tire.
Laurance-Oh. That's too bad. Couldn't you have telephoned?
Soony- I was going to, but I didn't have any change for a pay phone.
Ikea- You could have gotten some change in a store.
Soony- Not really. The tire went flat out on the edge of town. There wasn't any place to call from.
Ikea- WelL at least you're here now. No need to wait any longer. So let's get started!
    a flat tire:輪胎癟了
    Could you have telephoned?
    a pay phone:公用電話.
    get started(口語)=begin work
    ----------------------------------------
    Dialogue 8
    WHERE ARE WE?
    Laurance-Where on earth are we?
Soony- Judging by all the traffic, I'd say we're near the
    heart of the downtown area.
Laurance-What did I do wrong? Did I take a wrong turn?
Soony- I'm not sure, but I think that you turned left
when you should have turned right.
Laurance-Well, now the, problem is how to get back onto
    the main highway.
Soony- Well, if I may offer a suggestion ... Why don't you stop and ask a policeman?
Laurance-Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think I see one up there in the next block.
heart of the downtown area:heart=center;downtown area指繁華的商業(yè)區(qū).
    If I may offer a suggestion:直譯為"如果我可以提個建議的話".
    Dialogue 9
    CATCHING A BUS
Laurance- Is this where I catch the bus for the zoo?
Soony- You can take a T-30 from here, but then you have to walk about six blocks.
Laurance- That doesn't sound too bad.
Soony- Actually, if you go to the bus stop in the next block, you can take a Z-8 which will let you right off in front of the zoo.
Laurance- Maybe that's what I'll do. Thanks a lot.
    Soony- You're welcome.
    2. which will let you right off...:是定語從句,

    Dialogue 10
    AIRPORT BUS
laurance--What time doesd the bus leave for the airport?
    soony--I don't know.It used to leave every half hour,but
I think the schedule's been changed.
laurance--Do you know the telephone number to call?
soony--It's Enterprise 7--4700.At least that's what it used to be.
    laurance--Yeah,I'll try it.(PAUSE)They don't seem to answer.
    soony--I expect that it's a little too-early.I don't think they open until nine o'clock.
every half hour:是每隔半小時,類似的短語還有:every other day/every three weeks/every twenty days
