    laurance--You look happy today!
    soony--I am happy.I just heard I passed my physics exam
    laurance--Congratulations!I’m glad somebody’s happy.
    soony--Why?What’s the matter?
    laurance--Oh,I’m just worried,I guess I have to take a history exam next week.
    注解:
    1)I am happy:注意重音在am上,以示強調(diào)。
    2)physics:物理學。
    3)I’m glad somebody’s happy:somebody重讀,顯示說話者本人心里有些憂慮。
    4)What’s the matter=What’s troubling you
    5)I’m worried:此句中worried是過去分詞作表語,不是被動語態(tài)。

    LEARNING A LANGUAGE
    laurance--I give up!I simply can’t learn French!
    soony--Why do you say that?I think you’re making a lot of progress.
    laurance--No,I’m not.I try and try and I still can’t speak it very well.
    soony--Learning any language takes a lot of effort.But don’t give up.Why don’t we practice those dialogs together?
    laurance--Good idea.That just might help.
    注解:
    1)give up=stop trying,不再做努力。與 keep up trying 是一對反義詞組。
    2)make progress:是固定搭配。意思是取得進步/進展
    3)take a lot of effort:take在這里有“需要”“花費”的意思。

    BORROWING A BOOK
    laurance--Whose is this?
    soony--It’s mine.Why do you ask?
    laurance--Could I borrow it?I’ve been wanting to read it.
    soony--Be my guest,but I warn you.It’s not as good as they say.

    soony--Well,for one thing the plot is highly imporbable and for another,the characters seem more like paper dolls than people.
    laurance--That’s strange.Usually that author does a good job of charcterization.I’ve read three of his books and thought they were all well done.
    soony--I’ve been a fan of his for a long time too,but he really flubbed on this one!
    laurance--What did the reviews say?
    soony--They were mixed-some good,some bad.My review,bad!

    2)warn:告誡;預先通知
    3)What’s the matter with it?=What’s wrong with it?
    4)for one thing:舉例說。這個短語通常用來舉例某種原因。
    5)improbable:不可能的。
    6)dolls:玩偶;玩具娃娃
    7)flub:搞糟了

    GOING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL
    laurance--How’s school going?
    soony--Just fine.I finally got the grant to go to graduate school.
    laurance--Great!Are you starting your doctorate?
    soony--That’s right.I’m going to do it in biochemistry.
    laurance--Sounds like an interesting field.
    soony--It is to me.
    laurance--You’ve got a degree in nuclear physics,haven’t you!
    soony--Just a Master’s degree.Actually,biochemistry is a lot of better field for me.I’ve always preferred chemistry to physics.
    laurance--What do you plan to do after you finish?
    soony--I haven’t decided yet,but probably medical research.
    laurance--Well,you’ve got some years of hard study ahead of you.
    soony--I know it.

    1)How’s school going?注意此句中的school是不可數(shù)名詞,作“學業(yè)”“功課”解。又如:She always found school difficult.
    2)grant:助學金
    3)graduate school研究生院
    4)doctorate:博士學位
    5)It is to me=It is an interesting field to me.他的朋友說,sounds like而他說it is,語氣肯定。is要重讀。
    6)nuclear physics:核物理學。
    7)Master’s degree:碩士學位。
    8)prefer..to...:喜歡(前者)甚于后者。
    9)ahead of you:在你的前面。

    FREEZING COLD OUTSIDE
    (Wind noises)
    laurance--Brrrr!I’m cold.I thought it was supposed to get warmer today.
    soony--Yeah,I thought so,too.That’s what the weatherman said.
    laurance--It must be the wind that makes it so cold.I’m freezing!
    soony--Me,too.Let’s go inside.
    laurance--O.K,It’s no fun standing out here,even if the sun is shining.
    注解:
    1)get warmer=become warmer.系表結構,但口語中多用get,很少用become.
    2)yeah:(口語) =yes
    3)That’s what the weatherman said. what引導的是表語從句。
    4)It must be...cold.這是以it引導的強調(diào)句型。與It is this book that I bought yesterday是同樣的結構。must用以表示某種 “可能性”。這種結構中的that不可省略,也不可換作which.
    5)It’s no fun standing out here. standing out here是真正的主語。
