中國有膾炙人口的《白蛇傳》（the White Snake）的故事。講的是白蛇精（White Snake Spirit）和青蛇精（GREen Snake Spirit）來到人間（human world），然后和人間的一位書生（a scholar）相愛，后來他們生了一個孩子（to give birth to a son）?？墒蔷褪且驗樗麄兊慕Y(jié)合招來了殺身之禍。禪師法海（Fahai, a Buddhist monk）認(rèn)為他們的相愛違反了傳統(tǒng)的婚姻規(guī)則（conventions regarding marriage），傷風(fēng)敗俗（moral degeneration），他氣急敗壞。于是他就派遣神兵神將（officers and soldiers from the heaven）來捉拿白蛇精，并把她鎮(zhèn)壓在了一座塔（pagoda）下面。后來，青蛇精在深山中修煉，習(xí)武（martial arts training）多年，武藝達(dá)到了高深的境界。就來到那座塔前，救出了白蛇精。于是，白蛇精和兒子有可以團(tuán)聚（be reunited with）了。在這個故事里面，蛇這種動物被賦予（be endowed with）了崇高的人性（noble character of human nature）。所以我們也祝愿所有屬蛇的朋友（those born in the year of Snake）交好運(yùn)，新的一年萬事如意（all your dreams come true）！
