Taxi driver: $36.20.

搭出租車，看里程表付錢。這里程表叫odometer，英式英文則叫mileometer 或milometer。但無論英美，口頭上往往稱為clock。那當然是因為里程表針盤的形狀和鐘相似。例如：(1) The odometer reads 88,008 miles（里程表錄得八萬八千零八英里）。(2) According to the clock, we've traveled 2.5 miles（根據(jù)里程表，我們走了二英里半）。
珍對出租車司機說：Please step on it，這等于Please step on the gas，都是口語，這gas指‘油門’(gas pedal)。Step on the gas即 ‘加快油門’，例如：Step on the gas, time's running out（加快油門，時間無多了）。珍要求出租車司機開快一點，司機說：I can't go over the speed limit。開車超速，英文叫做speeding；速度計則叫speedometer，例如：(1) He had his driver's license revoked for speeding（他開車超速，駕駛執(zhí)照被吊銷了）。(2) The speedometer shows that you are 12 miles an hour above the speed limit（速度計顯示，你開車時速比限定時速高出十二英里）。
在外國搭出租車，首先須懂得說要到哪里。你可用以下句式：Could you please take me to the Five Star Hotel? 或 Take me to the Five Star Hotel please 或 I need to go to the Five Star Hotel 或To the Five Star Hotel please。假如地址復(fù)雜，可抄在紙上遞給司機說：Take me to this address please（請送我去這個地址）。
