字號(hào):

When Nora said, “I am in the bus now”, she should have said, “I am on the bus now.”
Nora and Jane are chatting over lunch……
Nora: (Nora is having trouble pronouncing 'th'sounds) You know, Jane, sitting here in dis food centre reminds me of my relatives' place in Malaysia.
Jane: Oh, really? Where do they live?
Nora: In Johor. Dey're a big family. Dey live in de countryside in tree houses.
    Jane: (surprised) Really?
Nora: Yes. Dave moved around a lot. When dey find dis place, dere was a lot of competition. Dey bit two other families to get dis place.
    Jane: Ooooh!
Nora: One man was sooo angry and he try to scare my uncle, but he was shot, so my uncle ignore him.
    Jane: That's a bit much!
Nora: I'll take you to visit. His farm is famous for its bins.
Jane: (worried) Thanks…… but maybe not this weekend! (pause) By the way, who's Dave?
    Nora: Who?
Narrator: It doesn't sound like the sort of place I'd like to visit, either! However, it's not as bad as Jane thinks. What did Jane understand by this?
    Replay……
Nora: Dey live in de countryside in tree houses
Narrator: Because Nora isn't pronouncing T H sounds clearly, Jane thought her relatives lived in the trees. This is what she should have said:
Nora: They live in the countryside in three houses.
Narrator: Nora also had some trouble with long and short sounds. Many Singaporeans pronounce these in the same way, making ship and sheep sound the same. Where did Nora go wrong?
    Replay……
Nora: Dey bit two other families to get dis place.
One man was sooo angry and he try to scare my uncle, but he was shot, so my uncle ignore him.
His farm is famous for its bins.
Narrator: If Nora pronounces these words properly, the trip will sound more inviting:
Nora: They beat two other families to get this place.
One man was sooo angry and he try to scare my uncle, but he was short, so my uncle ignore him.
His farm is famous for its beans.
Narrator: That sounds much nicer, doesn't it? There are some other mistakes in there, though. Can you find them? That's all for today at HotDotCom. Don't forget to call in tomorrow.
