    兩位領(lǐng)導人聲明,兩國將在互相尊重主權(quán)和領(lǐng)土完整,互不侵犯,互不干涉內(nèi)政,平等

    2. The country's stability depends on how well the president can groom a

    注:groom,使準備參加競選,做好準備,訓練。
    3. He accused the prime minister of burnishing his own image while folding

    注:accuse用在法律上應當譯成"指控",如:He was accused of theft.(他被指
    控犯有偷竊罪);fold,作不及物動詞用時有"關(guān)閉"、"垮臺"的意思此處轉(zhuǎn)義"退
    縮";burnishing原意是拋光、擦亮。
    4. The opposition leader's speech stole the headlines from the government.

    注:直譯是:*領(lǐng)袖的演講從政府手里偷走了報紙的通欄大標題。
    5. He said that the release of the men gave the green light to terrorism.
    他說,釋放這些人,等于向恐怖主義活動開綠燈。
    注:也可以翻譯成"等于縱容恐怖主義活動"。
    6. The CIA is drawing fire as its director is questioned over press leaks.
    中央情報局被罵得焦頭爛額,因為局長正因為報界泄密的問題接受質(zhì)詢。
    注:CIA=CENTUAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY,美國中央情報局;drawing fire ,原意是
    "招致猛烈抨擊";leaks, 此處顯然指"泄密"。
    7. Albright played hardball by walking out of the meeting.
    奧爾布萊特以退出會場的方式表示強硬的立場。
    注:play hardball,表示強硬(立場、*、反對等),hardball也可以用作形容詞,
    如 hardball questions,故意刁難,非常難回答的問題。
    8. While the West goes about its business, Russia gains nothing by going off
    into a corner to sulk.
    西方依然我行我素,而俄羅斯一無所獲,只好縮在旮旯(ga-la)里生氣。
    注:這個句子非常形象:to go about one's business 的意思是"該干什么還干什
    么";go off into a corner to sulk,直譯是"走開到一個角落里生氣"; gain
    nothing,什么也沒有得到。

    public relations譯為"宣傳"。

    注:blame…for…,把……歸罪于。
