Conversation A
Tessa and Bill are at the Winter Carnival in Quebec City. Tessa is stamping1 her feet and rubbing her hands.
Tessa: Brrr. How can everyone look so happy? Doesn't anyone realize how cold it is?
Bill: Sure they do. Wasn't that the whole reason the winter carnival began?
Tessa: Right. In 1894, people decided they needed a break from the long, cold winter.
Bill: It would have been just the thing to cheer them up!
Tessa: I would have taken a trip to Mexico, myself...
Conversation B
Bill: Come on! Let's go for a spin on the snow raft.
Tessa: Riding as fast as the wind down a snowy hill on a raft? You've got to be kidding.
Bill: I'm not! But we'd better hurry, otherwise we won't have time to watch the canoe race.
Tessa: But the river is full of ice floes!
Bill: Well, you know: Danger gets the heart racing!
