A hostage standoff at a small pharmacy ended Monday when a man carrying two guns was overpowered first by the effects of drugs he had requested and then by two of his six captives.

Witnesses said that the man, Jeff Harvey, 31, entered the Family Discount Pharmacy on Route 10 here near the town limits of Logan, the county seat, shortly after 1 p.m. and immediately fired one of his guns into the air.

Mr. Harvey proceeded to the pharmacy counter and demanded two drugs: Lortab, a narcotic painkiller, and Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug, said Jessica Thompson, 24, a pharmacy technician who was one of the six people inside when he entered.

Whatever he wanted, he got, Ms. Thompson said.

Mr. Harvey said he wanted to kill himself but did not wish to hurt anyone else, Ms. Thompson said. He was then given the Xanax and the Lortab, which he requested multiple times, crushed and snorted, she said.

As the tablets began to take effect, Mr. Harvey fumbled with his firearms, discharging four more shots, none of which struck anyone, she said.

When Mr. Harvey began to fall asleep around 3 p.m., two of the customers being held captive overpowered him, witnesses said. One customer, described by the witnesses as in his mid-70s, grabbed one of the guns and struck Mr. Harvey in the head with it.

The police moved in, and Mr. Harvey, a bandage wrapped around his head, was wheeled out of the pharmacy and into an ambulance.

The authorities said he was taken to Logan Regional Medical Center, after which he was to be arraigned on charges including aggravated robbery and wanton endangerment with a firearm.
