英語中有不少鳥獸魚蟲的名詞，除本義外，通常還有豐富的喻義，可直接用來指人，形象生動，意味雋永?，F(xiàn)將一些常見的介紹如下。
1．以“鳥”喻人
1)dove：(本義)鴿；(喻義)主和派人物。如：
Senator Mcgovern was one of leading doves in the Congress．
參議員麥戈文是國會里主和派的一個首領。
2)hawk：(本義)鷹；(喻義)主戰(zhàn)派人物。如：
…both Hawks and Doves are unanimous that the Vietnamese war must be brought to an immediate end if the United States economy is to avoid further disruption．
主戰(zhàn)派和主和派都一致同意，美國的經濟如果要避免進一步陷入混亂，就必須立即結束越南戰(zhàn)爭。
3)bird：(本義)鳥；(喻義)人，姑娘(俚語)。如：
John used to be a petty clerk，but he is quite a big bird now．
約翰本來是個小職員，可他現(xiàn)在已成了個大人物了。
又如：an early bird(早起者，早到的人)，a wise bird (聰明人)，a cunning bird(滑頭鬼)，birds of a feather(同類的人，一丘之貉)。
4)swan：(本義)天鵝；(喻義)詩人，作曲家。如：the Swan of Avon(艾馮河畔的大詩人，即莎士比亞，因為他的故鄉(xiāng)坐落在艾馮河畔。)、swan song(詩人或作曲家的最后作品或稱“天鵝絕唱”)。
5)night owl：(本義)貓頭鷹；(喻義)夜間工作的人，晚睡覺的人，夜貓子。如：
Her father，who was a night owl，was still awake．
她父親是個夜貓子，現(xiàn)在還沒睡。
2．以“獸”喻人
1) tiger：老虎；(喻)(比賽中的)主力隊員，虎將。如：
“All right，tiger，”said the coach to the sportsman，“Get out on the track and show us what you can do．”
“好，虎將，”教練對那位運動員說，“上場去，把你的本領表演給我們看看?！?BR> SC: 這個“虎將”譯得很怪。
2)bear：(本義)熊；(喻義)粗魯?shù)娜耍獗┰甑娜?。如?BR> She’s nice but her husband is such a bear that nobody likes him．
她和藹可親，但她丈夫為人粗魯，脾氣暴躁，誰都不喜歡他。
3)cat：(本義)貓；(喻義)惡女人，狠心的女人。如：
She’s such a cat．She never has a nice word to say about anyone．
她是那樣狠心的女人，從來沒說過誰一句好話。
4)dog：(本義)狗；(喻義)人。如：
James Reston：“I’m a kind of an old dog，．．．”
詹姆斯·賴斯頓說：“我是一個老家伙了……”
又如lucky dog(幸運兒)，a watchdog(監(jiān)察人)，a dumb dog([尤指在辯論等時]沉默不語的人)，a dog in the manger（占著茅坑不拉屎的人)。
3．以“魚”喻人
1)shark：(本義)鯊魚；(喻義)貪詐的人。如：a loan shark（高利貸主），the big sharks(壟斷資本家)。
2)eel：(本義)鰻魚；(喻義)滑頭的人。如：
He’s far from straightforward to deal with——a slippery eel．
他這個人與人打交道很不直爽——滑頭精。
3)fish：(本義)魚；(喻義)人。如：
That old uncle of yours is a queer fish．
你那位老伯伯，可真是個古怪的人。

可憐蟲
4。以“蟲”喻人
1)drone．(本義)雄峰；(喻義)懶漢，寄生蟲。如：
Those ungrateful drones who would drain your sweat—nay，drink your blood?
那些忘恩負義的寄生蟲，他們要榨干你們的汗水——不，不僅如此，還要吸干你們的血液!
2)bug：(本義)小蟲；(喻義)人。如：
Charles is a big bug in his club．
查爾斯是他那個俱樂部里的重要人物。
再如：a shutterbug／a camera bug(攝影迷)。
3)butterfly：(本義)蝴蝶；(喻義)輕浮的人。如：a social butterfly(交際花)。
4)chameleon：(本義)變色蜥蜴；(喻義)反復無常的人，變色 龍。如：
He’s a chameleon with no opinions of his own．
他是一個自己沒有主張、反復無常的人。
