每一種語言都有傳遞其文化內涵和智慧的諺語，具有悠久歷史的中文自不必說，但西方的英語雖然歷史不長，卻同樣有很多諺語或歇后語，蘊含著生活的哲理和智慧。
一、 The wish is father to the thought.
意謂愿望是思想的根源，有希望就有信念。
筆者自己的意思：既然是思想的根源。那思想是創(chuàng)造的推動力，我再加上
The wish is father to the thought; the thought is mother to creation.
活學活用：
─ like father, like son. 有其父就有其子─ The child is father of the man. 指三歲定八十歲，從少看老，也是江山易改，本性難移的寫照。
二、 Every dog has its day.
指富貴無常，凡人皆有得意的時候。（一個潦倒的人，以前也可能風光過，做人要厚道，不能看低別人。）
活學活用：
─ love me, love my dog. 愛屋及烏（打狗就是欺主了）
─ Don't wake a sleeping dog. 切莫打草驚蛇，不要生事。
─ walk the dog everyday. 每日帶狗散步。
─ dog leash 狗鏈； dog collar 狗項圈
