Jill Stuart is known for creating 2)girlie, feminine styles. For Spring 2001Stuart moves in a new direction. Inspired by the fun of the 50s and the 3)sass of the 80s. As Stuart tells Styles fashion correspondent 4)Paulina Porizkova, while the collection is bold and sexy, the foundation is basic.
Paulina Porizkova: What about the colors? I mean like right here on the 5)racks I'm seeing a lot of obvious in terms of a lot of whites, blacks and reds. I know this is just the beginning of it, but what, what are the other, what colors are you feeling for this season?
Jill Stuart: Well, I think the black and white look very clean and very modern and it really works with all of the shapes that I'm doing. I'm doing some T-shirt dresses and some middle tight lose dresses. I'm doing my own modern take on like the head skirts and the silver skirts from the 50s.
To give new life to past looks, Stuart starts with the 6)fabrics.
Jill Stuart: I feel that taking these shapes that you know might have been popular in the 50s and 80s in capitas, and in silk and in chiffon, which I’m really known for and putting them all into cotton and cotton 7)jerseys and cotton poplins and cotton fabrics makes them more today that makes them you know more modern.

James King (Actor/Model): I love it because I'm really into the 80s and this is a beautiful. It makes it sort of like 80s and 80s with really beautiful fabrics.
Isabeli Fontana (Model): I think it's just everything because it's kind of rock-and-roll and kind of young lady, you know, very sexy of course.
Devon Aoki (Model): It reminds me of my birth like my birthday party when I was like eight years old. I had these pink trousers with these huge rolls in the front and but it's really special and I think it's a really sexy dress and it's also sexy but there's like that Brigitte Bardot look that type, dimension.
Hair and makeup is also inspired by the 50s style of Brigitte Bardot.
James Brown (Hairstylist): It's kind of the next day. Like she's had her hair dyed but it's the next day you know after the party. It's like you know next day's hair for a beauty you know she needs a bag and she touched it up and all that. It's also very loosely, very 8)erratic curls and you just twist it very gently around the head you know just use a pin. There's a pin in where I feel very soft.
Lucia Pieroni (Makeup Artist): The look in this show is a bit more rough. The clothes are really great and kind of from 80s kind of clothes but you know they have those amazing prom dresses. And but it's sort of have a bit of Spanish feel to it. Black 9)eyeliner and the kind of look that comes from a 10)smudgy 11)mascara 12)smudging over the eyes and very clean natural skin.
