Wonderful anniversary (美好的周年紀念日)

藉著鮮花的魅力,我終于度過了一個非常成功及有意義的結婚周年紀念日。高興之余,我把當天的情況告訴了學生們。
    TEACHER'S
    Dear students.
    Last Thursday, 16th of November, had a most succeesful and meaningful wedding anniversary celebration. Early in the morning I asked somebody to send flowers to my wife at her school in shatin. There were two dozen of pink roses and two dozen red roses. I made a very nice anniversary card myself, and nine stars which symbolize "forever", were attached. Of course, my wife was very excited and she immediately called the paging centre and left me a message——"Thank you very much!" She did it twice. I would like to thank all of you for showing concern for my "BIG DAY", especially those who gave me very good suggestions. My wife's colleagues envied her very much, I guess.
    Immediately after school that day we drove to the romantic place where we went for our anniversary celebration last year. We spent an hour there before going home(we both wanted to go home early because our kids were waiting for us)。 She kept talking about how she felt that morning(she must have been very excited because that was the first time after our wedding that I had sent her flowers—I know I do not measure up to a standard husband)。 A lady movie star was also there but I did not know who she was. I only heard the waiter say so. Thank God that we went home safely(no accident)that evening. I think it is the most successful and meaningful wedding anniversary celebration I have ever had.
    Speaking of test results, I would like to say to you all—"forget about the past and start preparing for tomorrow." The Test Week is gone. Good results! Bad results! We can't change them! It is not good to feel too happy or too sad. Attention! The Mid—Term Examination is coming. There sults have not been decided yet. What you are doing now can change your "destiny".
    Many teachers are complaining that4C is very noisy. Some classmates are feeling very frustrated also since they cannot concentrate because of your noise. I am getting very, very unhappy because you don't love your teachers; you don't love your classates; you are doing something to hurt their feelings. I am getting angry not because you are talking in class. I am getting angry because you don't stop when teachers and classmates are feeling sad.

    留意不同解釋:
    ●a most successful…=一個非常成功的……
    ●the most successful…=最成功的
    這里使用somebody是因為:
    ●不想說出那個人的名字。
    ●不知道那個人的名字。
    雖然用twenty-four也可以,但用two dozen則可表現(xiàn)自己的英語能力。
    symbolize之后本應接名詞,但forever卻是一個形容詞,故特別加上引號。
    showing concern for跟being concerned about意思相近,但用前者較為流暢。
    …envied(動詞)her very much跟…were very much jealous(形容詞)of her意思相近。
    加上immediately更能表明迫切的心情。
    用an是由于hour中的h不發(fā)音。
    do not measure up to的意思是“達不到某標準”。
    say so、think so或do so都是屬于同一類的短語。
    這里用“現(xiàn)在時”(is)是因為在寫此文章時,它仍是最成功的一次。
    留意ever的其他用法:
    ●…the most beautiful lady I haveever seen.
    ●…the most wonderful music I haveever heard.
    ●…the most meaningful thing I haveever done.
    Speaking of可以用About、Regarding、As regards或Talking about等來取代。
    用start preparing或start to prepare都可以。
    gone在這里屬形容詞,意思相等于over.
    這種并列句不算是正規(guī)英語結構但傳意效果頗佳;不過在文章中不宜多用。
    留意正確用法:
    ●…h(huán)ave been decided yet. ×
    ●…h(huán)ave been decided aiready. √
    ●…h(huán)ave not been decided yet. √
    destiny的同義詞包括:fate、 fortune和lot.
    這里用since而不用because是因為句末需要用because of,故不希望because重復出現(xiàn)。
    用分號(;)可引導讀者一口氣把這些句子讀完,以增強傳意效果。
    這里用hurt them也可以。
    這句子的作用是讓頑皮的學生們反省自己的過錯。
    LANGUAGE
    Capital, inverted commas&exclamation mark
    當我們寫一些非公事性或非正規(guī)的文章(informal essay)時,我們應該多用一些文字以外的傳意工具來幫助傳達信息。在前面的單元里也曾經(jīng)分析過括號和分號的應用;現(xiàn)在讓我們來看看“引號”(inverted commas)、“感嘆號”(exclamation mark)和“大寫”(capital letter)的用處吧。
    當我們說話的時候,往往會把需要強調的內容說得大聲一點或把重要的部分說得慢一些。但在寫文章的時候,如何能達到這些效果呢?請參考本單元的例子。
    EXAMPLE
    1.…and nine stars which symbolize "FOREVER" were attached.
    2.…and nine stars which symbolize "F-O-R-E-V-E-R" were attached.
    3.…thank all of you for showing concern for my "BIG DAY", …
    4.I would like to say to you all——"FORGET ABOUT THE PAST AND STARTPREPARING FOR TOMORROW."
    5.What you are doing now can change your "destiny".
    以上的例句便是用了引號和大寫來增強傳意效果。另外,我們說話的聲調常常帶著感情,這種感情又如何能滲入字里行間,令文章更有感染力呢?請看看本單元中使用感嘆號的例子。
