Dear students，
Some of you are very worried about English tests. You don't need to be. Paper III is totally unseen. As for paper II， there will be about 120 questions. 20-30 questions are concerned with the things you have learnt from units one and two of A Modern Course. If you spend a lot of time going through all the exercises in New Exercises in English， it will be a great waste of time. It is not worth it. Moreover， we shall also give you some materials to help you prepare for the exam. Take it easy， boys and girls. Besides， you should aim at getting a good result in the Certificate Exam instead of school tests. Do you remember what I told you—in the Cert. Exam？ There will be only a few questions about tenses. Well， I don't mean this can apply to all of you because I know some of you never worry about the tests. Some have too much confidence while others have already given up.
Actually， I don't mean that tenses are not important but that the ways of teaching tenses in many grammar books are not good enough. For example， it is important to teach students when to use a gerund and when to use an infinitive with “to”。 I did it but in a way easier for you to understand.
I am happy to tell you that Fanny Ng in 4D has promised to join our STS
programme. Let's welcome her. Fanny extended her hearty congratulations to us on winning the notice-board design contest. I would like to thank her for her kindness. I will also try to invite Ivy Hung in her class to join us because both of them are very much interested in communicative writing. Of course I have to assure them that I won't disclose their secrets， if any.
Next Wednesday will be the Ninth Anniversary of my wedding. Now I am worrying about what to buy my wife and how to celebrate that “great” day. Should you have any good ideas， please tell me. Many thanks！

aim at之后需加動(dòng)名詞（即動(dòng)詞加-ing）。
instead of可用rather than代替。
because的同義詞句括：as、for及since.
confidence（解作“信心”）是不可數(shù)名詞，因此：

●many confidence×
●few confidence×
I did it跟I have done it的意思相近。
這里的happy可用pleased或glad代替。
extended可寫作offered.
congratulation通常用復(fù)數(shù)。而on與congratulate/congratulations連用。

現(xiàn)代教育理念并不鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生死記硬背，以免導(dǎo)致“被動(dòng)”教育。這種理念基本上是正確的，但當(dāng)學(xué)生們明白了某些詞語(yǔ)或句子的意思和用途后，不妨花點(diǎn)工夫把那些詞語(yǔ)或句子記下來。因?yàn)橛行┯⒄Z(yǔ)句子跟漢語(yǔ)句子的結(jié)構(gòu)相距太遠(yuǎn)，若學(xué)生們不多花點(diǎn)工夫把它們記下來，恐怕幾天后便忘得一干二凈。請(qǐng)看本單元的例子。
