［背景］由于英漢兩種語言有著不同的表達(dá)習(xí)慣，我們在翻譯一些常見的短語（聯(lián)合式）時(shí)，要注意一個(gè)搭配的順序問題。例如英語的track and field，track是“跑道，徑賽”，“field”是“場地，田賽”，而漢語的習(xí)慣表達(dá)與之相反，通說為“田徑”。
［目標(biāo)］掌握一些更符合英文表達(dá)習(xí)慣的用法，在翻譯和寫作的時(shí)候力求準(zhǔn)確而達(dá)意。
［攻略］I 順序相同
1）up and down：上上下下，起伏地
The boat bobbed up and down in the water
那只小船在水中顛簸。
2）more or less：或多或少，有點(diǎn)兒
He more or less thought it was his duty to tell me.
他或多或少認(rèn)為告訴我是他的責(zé)任。
3）rock and roll：搖滾樂
4）deaf and dumb：又聾又啞
5）heart and soul：全心全意地，滿腔熱情地
He devoted himself heart and soul to his work.
他全心全意地致力于工作。
6）day and night：日日夜夜，夜以繼日
7）husband and wife：夫妻，夫婦
They have lived together as husband and wife for years.
他們結(jié)為夫婦共同生活了很多年。
8）black and white：（指電影、電視、照片等）黑白
I changed my black and white television for a color set.
我把黑白電視機(jī)換成了一臺彩色的。
9）black and blue：青一塊、紫一塊的
10）wax and wane：（力量或重要性）興衰，盛衰
Throughout history em pires have waxed and waned.
歷各個(gè)王朝均有興衰。
11）home and abroad：國內(nèi)外，海內(nèi)外
Mount Tai attracts many tourists from home and abroad.
泰山吸引了許多海內(nèi)外游客。
12）Ladies and gentlemen：女士們、先生們（用在發(fā)言的開始，雖然有時(shí)漢語也會(huì)說：“先生們，女士們”，但英語習(xí)慣始終是“l(fā)adies”在前面。）
13）from head to foot／toe：從頭到腳，全身
The children were covered in mud from head to toe.
孩子們滿身沾滿了泥。
14）the First／Second World War：
第一次／第二次世界大戰(zhàn)（也可以表示為World War I和World War II）
15）from first to last：自始至終，一貫
16）science and technology：科學(xué)技術(shù)，科技
Science and technology can reproduce productivity.
科學(xué)技術(shù)是第一生產(chǎn)力。

17）總書記：general secretary（不過“總領(lǐng)事”是“consul general”，“總司令”是“commander in chief”，另外“secretary general”為“秘書長”。）
II 順序不同
1）東南西北：north，south，east and west（注：這類順序一定要注意區(qū)別，盡管漢語有時(shí)也說“東西南北”。此外東北、東南、西北、西南的英語表達(dá)為northeast， southeast，northwest和southwest.注意單詞里前后方位的英漢順序不同。）
2）左右：right and left
3）身心健康：be sound in m ind and body
4）衣食住行：food，clothing，shelter，and transportation
5）你我他：you，he and I
6）救死扶傷：heal the wounded and rescue the dying
7）back and forth：前前后后，來來回回地
He paced back and forth in his room.他在房間里來回踱步。
8）（in）black and white：白紙黑字（書寫的或印刷的）
I want the contract in black and white.我要這項(xiàng)合同見諸文字。
9）sweet-and-sour pork chop：酸甜排骨（不過有時(shí)也說糖醋排骨）；酸辣湯：hot and sour soup
10）by／in twos and threes：三三兩兩地
Applications for the job are coming in slowly in twos and threes.
申請這份工作的信件三三兩兩來得很慢。
11）sink or swim（fail or not）：成功與否
Sink or swim，I'll try it.不管成功與否，我都要試一試。
12）foot-and-mouth（disease）：（牛羊等的）口蹄疫
13）go through fire and water（for sb／sth）：為……赴湯蹈火
14）（by）fire and sword：（戰(zhàn)爭中）殺人放火
15）（there is）no smoke without fire：無火不生煙（謠言也是事出有因的）
