The Jade Hairpin
The Jade Hairpin, a legendary opera drama in the Ming Dynasty authored by Gao Lian, is honored as one of the ten major traditional comedies. It describes the love story of Pan Bizheng, a scholar and Chen Miaochang, a nun in the Southern Song Dynasty. With meticulous portrayal of the mentality of figures, the drama features elegant lyric and a strong tinge of comedy. It serves as the source for Kun opera and Zhezixi of other operas such as Qintiao, Toushi and Qiujiang.
