Peony Pavilion, short for Peony Pavilion-Record of Return of Soul, is one of the representative works authored by Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) a dramatist in the Ming Dynasty in 1598. Through the winding love story of Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei, it is permeated with romanticism featuring the pursuit of personal happiness, call for the liberation of personality, and opposition to feudalism. It is an excellent romantic work in the history of Chinese opera.
