    Inacomplexandfrighteningsociety,wemustlooktothemiddleroad.Wemustinfusethebestofthehighandthelowroads.Currentresearchhashadalottosayoncurriculumdevelopment.Overreachingargumentsdefendthequalityofstudents’self-directedlearning.However,inordertoprepareourstudentsforthissociety,wemusthavedevelopedthebackboneandanchorforcurriculum.Contentandperformancestandards(i.e.curricula)needtobedevelopedbythedistrict’seducatorsasamapforteachers.WheneducatorsprovidestudentswithchoicesWITHINthemapofcurriculum,studentsrelishinthefreedomandtakeownershipfortheirlearning.
    Werewetoprovidestudentstheultimateauthorityincurriculumdevelopment,wewouldbedoinganinjusticenotonlytoourstudentsbuttosocietyasawhole.Therearespecificskillsandabilitiesthatneedtobedevelopedandtaught--regardlessofstudents’(orforthatmatter,teachers’)interest.Inmyprofessionasanelementaryeducatorandasaparent,Ivaluetheabilitiestoread,writeandbemathematicallyproficient.Thosestudentsnotmasteringthosecriticalskillsareatadisadvantage.Weseethosestudentsbecomedestructiveordepressed.Ihaveobservedstudentsstrugglingwiththebasicsbecomeoutcastsintheirownlittleworlds.Veryyoungoutcastsgrowintoadultoutcasts. 外語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)網(wǎng)
