One’s style of the dress reveals the human obsession with both novelty(新奇,新穎) and tradition. People use clothing to declare their membership(表明資格或身份) in a particular social group; however, the rules for what is acceptable dress for that group may change. In affluent societies(富足的社會(huì)), this changing of the rules is the driving force behind fashions. By keeping up with fashions(跟隨時(shí)尚), that is, by changing their clothing style frequently but simultaneously, members of a group both satisfy(滿足) their desire for novelty and obey the rules, thus demonstrating(顯示,表明)their membership in the group.
There are some interesting variations regarding(與…相關(guān)) individual status. Some people, particularly in the West, consider themselves of such high status that they do not need to display it with their clothing. For example, many wealthy people in the entertainment industry appear in very casual clothes, such as the worn jeans and work boots of a manual laborer(手工業(yè)者). However, it is likely that asubtle(微妙的)but important signal, such as an expensive wristwatch(手表), willprevail over(勝過) the message of the casual dress. Such an inverted status display(倒轉(zhuǎn)的身份顯示) is most likely to occur where the person’s high status isconveyed(傳達(dá),表現(xiàn)) in ways other than(而不是) with clothing, such as having a famous face.

    D.following traditional rules
2.Why does the author discuss individual status in paragraph 2?
A.To state that individuals status is not important in the West
B.To argue that individuals need not obey every fashion rule
C.To contrast the status of entertainers with that of manual laborers
D.To explain how high status may involve an inverted status display
    3. with the booming economy and rising status, Chinese people are beginning to remember the clothing belonging to our own nation which is called “han fu”(漢服),and some youth have worn them in some traditional festivals. Please write an essay to express your own thinking.
    答案:
    1.B 2.D
1.題目的意思是“根據(jù)作者觀點(diǎn),下列哪個(gè)不符合時(shí)尚的目的”。A和D,在文中第一句話“ One’s style of the dress reveals the human obsession with both novelty and tradition.”可以體現(xiàn)出來,C項(xiàng)可以在第一段中“People use clothing to declare their membership in a particular social group”找到答案,只有B項(xiàng)“為信仰的變化發(fā)出信號(hào)”沒有在文中體現(xiàn)。因此,選B。
2.題目的意思是“為什么作者在第二段中討論個(gè)人地位?”第二段的最后一句話“Such an inverted status display is most likely to occur where the person’s high status is conveyedin ways other than with clothing, such as having a famous face.”是對(duì)整段的總結(jié),同時(shí)說出了本段的目的,即“哪些地位高的人會(huì)包括在倒轉(zhuǎn)的地位表現(xiàn)中”。因此選D。A意思是“為了陳述在西方國家個(gè)人地位不重要”,而“Some people, particularly in the West, consider themselves of such high status that they do not need to display it with their clothing.”
