Each year, we watch many shows and live performances to memorize important occasions. And since I’m so crazy about English and so English movies, the show that I absolutely look forward to every year is the annual academy awards, the Oscar.

The Oscar is the highest honor in the movie business because it shows recognition to the movie producers, actors and directors for the wonderful work they present us each year on the wide screen. But to me, it’s more like a show to watch, a variety show, if you will because it has everything that a English and movie lover can ask for, wonderful hosting, touching accepting speeches and 4 to 5 live shows of music in movies.

The 80th and 81st academy awards are my favorite.
The 80th was held in Kodak Theater, Los Angeles, not far away from Hollywood. And it was hosted by the very funny and all-American host, Jon Steward. All through the show, he possessed a wonderful sense of humor and kept the atmosphere so live.

The 81st was hosted by the Australian actor, Hugh Jackman. I didn’t know he could host before I watched the show. And he did a somewhat different job than Jon Steward, because he doesn’t tell jokes, and to everyone’s amazement, he could sing and dance. The Jazz dance he did with Beyonce is incredibly breath-taking. He is tall, handsome, and versatile.

The show provides me excellent examples of fine English speaking. And in it, I can listen and learn about the pronunciation of the famous actors’ names. And that you can’t learn from any book. And the effect the show has on me is that I love movie more, I understand the movie industry more, I refuse to buy pirated DVDs, and every time there’s a new movie, I will watch it in a dark room filled with other audience and enjoy the journey of movie watching on the big screen. With so many movies every year, our expectations in life become more, right? And this show just shows us that.
