二、南衛(wèi)理公會大學的歷史
聯(lián)合衛(wèi)理公會在1911年建立了SMU。學校保證并承諾教學無宗派傾向，學術(shù)自由和開放研究。自SMU成立就受到達拉斯市的支持，當?shù)鼐用竦盅毫?300,000以確保大學的地理位置。為了感謝市政，SMU把第一棟建筑命名為達拉斯廳，至今仍是這所大學的標志和中心建筑。該建筑設(shè)計模仿了弗吉尼亞大學的圓形大廳，于1915年建成并開放。當時把整座大學全部設(shè)置在這座建筑物內(nèi)，甚至包括銀行和理發(fā)廳。大學的印章被刻在圓形大廳的地板上。達拉斯廳已被登記為國家注冊歷史遺跡。
