二、羅徹斯特大學(xué)的歷史
羅徹斯特大學(xué)成立于1850年，最開始時(shí)為一個(gè)浸信會(huì)資助的學(xué)校。該校的成立源于柯蓋德大學(xué)所在的美國(guó)紐約州的漢密爾頓市。1848年，浸信會(huì)教育協(xié)會(huì)(BaptistEducationSociety)計(jì)劃將醫(yī)學(xué)中心內(nèi)的醫(yī)學(xué)及牙醫(yī)學(xué)院柯蓋德大學(xué)搬到羅徹斯特市，但由于法律訴訟被迫停止。表示反對(duì)的董事會(huì)成員，大學(xué)老師以及學(xué)生成立了羅徹斯特大學(xué)，并于1850年1月31日從紐約州大學(xué)委員會(huì)得到了授權(quán)。同年11月份，羅徹斯特大學(xué)開課，一開始共有大概60名學(xué)生。
羅徹斯特大學(xué)最開始就在位于羅徹斯特市區(qū)布法羅大街上的美國(guó)酒店(UnitedStatesHotel)里。1853年，校區(qū)東移至當(dāng)時(shí)的郊區(qū)，現(xiàn)在的大學(xué)街(UniversityAvenue)上。當(dāng)?shù)厣倘伺c國(guó)會(huì)議員AzariahBoody為新校區(qū)捐贈(zèng)了8英畝的土地，后來學(xué)校又從他手中購(gòu)買了17英畝的土地來建造新校區(qū)。

1.Arts, Sciences and Engineering
Arts, Sciences and Engineering at the University of Rochester is comprised of the School of Arts and Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and offers both the intellectual excitement of a major research university and the intimacy and opportunities of a great liberal arts college.
Within Arts, Sciences and Engineering, The College is home for most undergraduates during their studies at the University of Rochester. The graduate training provided by the departments and programs of Arts, Sciences and Engineering accounts for over 60% of the PhD degrees awarded by the University. Students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are able to enrich their education further by drawing on the other schools of the University: the Eastman School of Music; School of Medicine and Dentistry; School of Nursing; William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration; and the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
