Without any doubt the Nobel Prize is the most prestigious prize in science. The prize was first granted in 1901, and since then it has been awarded to a number of scientists attached to Utrecht University.The form and extent of their relationship with Utrecht varies widely: from a brief enrolment as a student (R?ntgen), or a short-lived professorship (Debye), to a long and substantial relationship (Eijkman and Veltman) or even an uninterrupted one ('t Hooft). R. Magnus would have been awarded the Nobel prize in 1927 if he had not died unexpectedly.

The NWO Spinoza Prize is the highest Dutch award in science. Spinoza Prize winners each receive an amount of 2.5 million euros to spend on scientific research of their choice.
