在某種程度上，PS就是對你的CV進行必要的說明與擴展。這里，請允許我用強調(diào)的語氣：CV的價值與要義就在于你要盡一切可能避免你的申請在最初的審查中就被刷掉! 如果你做到了，那么恭喜你，在接下來，你需要快速轉(zhuǎn)動你的右腦，因為在某種程度上，你已經(jīng)進入了一個談判環(huán)節(jié)。尤其對于那些手持CSC重要砝碼的同學(xué)，已經(jīng)占有了一定的先機。
在CV篇我已經(jīng)講過了，只要你足夠Tricky，通過最初的簡歷審查并不難，但前提是你得自己先確定你對教授來說是一個FIT。剩下的任務(wù)，就可以放心地交給PS來完成了。一份好的PS，足以扭轉(zhuǎn)你的劣勢，挽救你岌岌可危的申請，以至于改變教授對你的最初印象!
PS也就是 Personal Statement，其實我更喜歡Statement of Purpose，或者歐洲人喜歡用的 Motivation Letter的說法，也就是動機信。我也比較偏愛于動機信這種提法，與個人陳述相比，聽起來要明確的多。
因為動機信與個人的教育/生活經(jīng)歷緊密相聯(lián)，所以很難說可以找到一個“通用的法則”，這點與CV有很大的不同。但我相信，一份好的動機信應(yīng)該是有生命的。我個人感覺，最糟糕的動機信莫過于那種流水帳的記事，讓教授很容易打瞌睡。
你的那些零碎的生命故事需要被串起來，請嘗試用你的價值觀與人生追求把他們給串起來。讓教授看到你的動機信后，會覺得你是一個具有好的情商的人，適合于同他在一起工作。這里，我想引用一段話來說明這個問題：A successful person lives his life through his values. He knows his purpose. Being accountable in all the things that are happening in life is an example of having high emotional quotient.
這樣說起來有點抽象，這里我嘗試通過我的經(jīng)歷來說明這個問題/方法。
首先，我還是要先提示一下。動機信的最初幾行應(yīng)該用來說明你寫這封信的目的(申請博士職位與獎學(xué)金)，以及你目前的狀態(tài)(正在讀研或者工作)。別一開始就是I was born in... ，那樣會讓老外相當(dāng)費解的!
交代完背景信息后，進入主題。
我是先寫本科階段的 My undergraduate education was trained in ...這里，我的問題比較嚴(yán)重，那就是成績不好，當(dāng)時比較貪玩，上課的時間總是與我踢球或者打游戲的時間沖突。我自己算了一下，平均分也就70+分，還掛過幾科。這里，我沒有選擇回避這一點，相反，我要強調(diào)它!以證明我是一個從逆境中走出來的人，一個浪子回頭金不換的典范!
當(dāng)然，描述也是需要技巧的，我是這么說的：But truth be told, in the undergraduate period I was not an outstanding student subjected to the judgment based on academic records. At that time I thought textbooks were more or less boring and professors’ courses were far away from reality. Further more, then I noticed little that I will be involved in academic research in one day.

來伏筆，為什么有一天我會選擇搞學(xué)術(shù)呢，而且肯定不是一時沖動的舉動。
接著看：However, a turning point occurred when I participated in a research project ×××. It’s a××× project on innovative mechanical design, which was truly challenging to me with nearly zero engineering experience. But I found soon that it’s an amazing project for solving practical problems for company, with valuable scientific issues involved. Then I put my heart in the work×××××. This experience excited me a great curiosity in research as I tasted the feelings of discovering something new and solving real problems in engineering. That’s just stirring.
這樣子，你就完成了一個不小的逆轉(zhuǎn)。這就好比說是談戀愛，年輕的時候我們總想追求一個我們真正很愛很愛的人，但追尋了很多年，卻仍就沒有找到。直到有一天，你突然頓悟：原來愛不是平白無故產(chǎn)生的，只有兩個人在一起經(jīng)歷了很多，尤其是一起吃了很多苦以后，才會最終真的相愛，并廝守一生。
有點扯遠了，我的意思是你光憑嘴說你喜歡科研，喜歡的不得了，就是喜歡，好使嗎?教授相信嗎?起碼我看了之后會感覺很假，所以你得講故事，越生動越好，但不要瞎杜撰，像寫小說一樣，那樣就適得其反了。
下面講研究生階段。因為很多信息，如課題/論文等都在CV中有過介紹，動機信這里就不要再重復(fù)了，可以一言以蔽之： Most of my research activities at ××× are presented in my CV for your information. In a word, I’ve been enjoyed the three years at ×××, especially ×××
然后，我寫了一些我工作的體會，希望這段描述對大家也有借鑒意義。 this ongoing working experience is very valuable for me, not only technically. In fact it teaches me something that I hadn’t learnt from school, e.g. EQ is much more important than IQ.
下面的內(nèi)容往往被很多申請者所忽視，那就是你應(yīng)該談?wù)勀銓δ闵暾埖膶W(xué)校/實驗室，尤其是導(dǎo)師的了解情況，為什么這個研究課題對你有吸引力，你又為什么是一個合適的人選!
這里，我想毫無保留向大家展示一下我的看家本領(lǐng)，這可是不輕易示人的東西啊。其實也就是我在Presentation中的陳述的幾點，這幾點得到兩位指導(dǎo)教授很好的評價：Clear, strongly impressed.
Why I apply for this thesis
Firstly, I am really interested in this research proposal, which, expected to be carried out on the microscopic scale, is very appealing to me.
Secondly, the thesis’s supervisors are well-known specialists in this research field, whose guidance and advice will be absolutely helpful for my academic career.
Lastly, full-field measurement technology is still considered as a relative emerging research direction, but active in France, where I think is the best place to devote my energy to this promising research area.
Why I am a worthy candidate
Having three years’ research experience on full-filed measurements, particularly in terms of experiment, which is crucial to this thesis research.
Skilled in numerical analysis and data processing by means of the software MatLab, which is eagerly expected in this thesis research.
With sufficient knowledge of metal properties and good comprehension of nonlinear mechanics behaviors in solid, which is a favorable condition for this thesis research.

動機信被認(rèn)為是很正式的申請文件，里面不要出現(xiàn) I'd, don't 這樣的省略用法，也盡量避免有語法與表達問題。在提交正式文件的時候，教授給了我很多建議，還幫我進行了一些修改。
我上面談的動機信是寫給教授看的，在他同意接受你之后，可能還需要寫個比較正式的動機信，用來給研究生院負責(zé)評審獎學(xué)金的人來看的。那個就不用擔(dān)心了，基本就是個形式，教授會幫你包裝的。
