PS也就是 Personal Statement，其實(shí)我更喜歡Statement of Purpose，或者歐洲人喜歡用的 Motivation Letter的說法，也就是動(dòng)機(jī)信。我也比較偏愛于動(dòng)機(jī)信這種提法，與個(gè)人陳述相比，聽起來(lái)要明確的多。
因?yàn)閯?dòng)機(jī)信與個(gè)人的教育/生活經(jīng)歷緊密相聯(lián)，所以很難說可以找到一個(gè)“通用的法則”，這點(diǎn)與CV有很大的不同。但我相信，一份好的動(dòng)機(jī)信應(yīng)該是有生命的。我個(gè)人感覺，最糟糕的動(dòng)機(jī)信莫過于那種流水帳的記事，讓教授很容易打瞌睡。
你的那些零碎的生命故事需要被串起來(lái)，請(qǐng)嘗試用你的價(jià)值觀與人生追求把他們給串起來(lái)。讓教授看到你的動(dòng)機(jī)信后，會(huì)覺得你是一個(gè)具有好的情商的人，適合于同他在一起工作。這里，我想引用一段話來(lái)說明這個(gè)問題：A successful person lives his life through his values. He knows his purpose. Being accountable in all the things that are happening in life is an example of having high emotional quotient.
這樣說起來(lái)有點(diǎn)抽象，這里我嘗試通過我的經(jīng)歷來(lái)說明這個(gè)問題/方法。
首先，我還是要先提示一下。動(dòng)機(jī)信的最初幾行應(yīng)該用來(lái)說明你寫這封信的目的(申請(qǐng)博士職位與獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金)，以及你目前的狀態(tài)(正在讀研或者工作)。別一開始就是I was born in... ，那樣會(huì)讓老外相當(dāng)費(fèi)解的!
交代完背景信息后，進(jìn)入主題。
我是先寫本科階段的 My undergraduate education was trained in ...這里，我的問題比較嚴(yán)重，那就是成績(jī)不好，當(dāng)時(shí)比較貪玩，上課的時(shí)間總是與我踢球或者打游戲的時(shí)間沖突。我自己算了一下，平均分也就70+分，還掛過幾科。這里，我沒有選擇回避這一點(diǎn)，相反，我要強(qiáng)調(diào)它!以證明我是一個(gè)從逆境中走出來(lái)的人，一個(gè)浪子回頭金不換的典范!
當(dāng)然，描述也是需要技巧的，我是這么說的：But truth be told, in the undergraduate period I was not an outstanding student subjected to the judgment based on academic records. At that time I thought textbooks were more or less boring and professors’ courses were far away from reality. Further more, then I noticed little that I will be involved in academic research in one day.
人都有過年少輕狂的日子吧，可能正在讀你信的教授也有過!這段描述同時(shí)給我的后文買下
來(lái)伏筆，為什么有一天我會(huì)選擇搞學(xué)術(shù)呢，而且肯定不是一時(shí)沖動(dòng)的舉動(dòng)。
接著看：However, a turning point occurred when I participated in a research project ×××. It’s a××× project on innovative mechanical design, which was truly challenging to me with nearly zero engineering experience. But I found soon that it’s an amazing project for solving practical problems for company, with valuable scientific issues involved. Then I put my heart in the work×××××. This experience excited me a great curiosity in research as I tasted the feelings of discovering something new and solving real problems in engineering. That’s just stirring.
這樣子，你就完成了一個(gè)不小的逆轉(zhuǎn)。這就好比說是談戀愛，年輕的時(shí)候我們總想追求一個(gè)我們真正很愛很愛的人，但追尋了很多年，卻仍就沒有找到。直到有一天，你突然頓悟：原來(lái)愛不是平白無(wú)故產(chǎn)生的，只有兩個(gè)人在一起經(jīng)歷了很多，尤其是一起吃了很多苦以后，才會(huì)最終真的相愛，并廝守一生。
有點(diǎn)扯遠(yuǎn)了，我的意思是你光憑嘴說你喜歡科研，喜歡的不得了，就是喜歡，好使嗎?教授相信嗎?起碼我看了之后會(huì)感覺很假，所以你得講故事，越生動(dòng)越好，但不要瞎杜撰，像寫小說一樣，那樣就適得其反了。
下面講研究生階段。因?yàn)楹芏嘈畔?，如課題/論文等都在CV中有過介紹，動(dòng)機(jī)信這里就不要再重復(fù)了，可以一言以蔽之： Most of my research activities at ××× are presented in my CV for your information. In a word, I’ve been enjoyed the three years at ×××, especially ×××
然后，我寫了一些我工作的體會(huì)，希望這段描述對(duì)大家也有借鑒意義。 this ongoing working experience is very valuable for me, not only technically. In fact it teaches me something that I hadn’t learnt from school, e.g. EQ is much more important than IQ.
下面的內(nèi)容往往被很多申請(qǐng)者所忽視，那就是你應(yīng)該談?wù)勀銓?duì)你申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校/實(shí)驗(yàn)室，尤其是導(dǎo)師的了解情況，為什么這個(gè)研究課題對(duì)你有吸引力，你又為什么是一個(gè)合適的人選!
這里，我想毫無(wú)保留向大家展示一下我的看家本領(lǐng)，這可是不輕易示人的東西啊。其實(shí)也就是我在Presentation中的陳述的幾點(diǎn)，這幾點(diǎn)得到兩位指導(dǎo)教授很好的評(píng)價(jià)：Clear, strongly impressed.
Why I apply for this thesis
Firstly, I am really interested in this research proposal, which, expected to be carried out on the microscopic scale, is very appealing to me.
Secondly, the thesis’s supervisors are well-known specialists in this research field, whose guidance and advice will be absolutely helpful for my academic career.
Lastly, full-field measurement technology is still considered as a relative emerging research direction, but active in France, where I think is the best place to devote my energy to this promising research area.
Why I am a worthy candidate
Having three years’ research experience on full-filed measurements, particularly in terms of experiment, which is crucial to this thesis research.
Skilled in numerical analysis and data processing by means of the software MatLab, which is eagerly expected in this thesis research.
With sufficient knowledge of metal properties and good comprehension of nonlinear mechanics behaviors in solid, which is a favorable condition for this thesis research.

動(dòng)機(jī)信被認(rèn)為是很正式的申請(qǐng)文件，里面不要出現(xiàn) I'd, don't 這樣的省略用法，也盡量避免有語(yǔ)法與表達(dá)問題。在提交正式文件的時(shí)候，教授給了我很多建議，還幫我進(jìn)行了一些修改。
我上面談的動(dòng)機(jī)信是寫給教授看的，在他同意接受你之后，可能還需要寫個(gè)比較正式的動(dòng)機(jī)信，用來(lái)給研究生院負(fù)責(zé)評(píng)審獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金的人來(lái)看的。那個(gè)就不用擔(dān)心了，基本就是個(gè)形式，教授會(huì)幫你包裝的。
