Athabasca University’s student awards recognize a variety of achievements and support students in financial need. Criteria varies for different awards, but generally in order to qualify you must successfully complete at least one AU course. We do not offer entrance scholarships.
AU scholarships are available for students at all levels of study
undergraduate (including certificates and diplomas),master’s (including certificates and diplomas) and doctoral.
Some scholarships are based strictly on academic achievement – you don’t need to apply for these nomination awards. Most of our scholarships are application awards – these focus on academic excellence and other criteria that can include
career pursuits,volunteer activity and active community participation.

These are monetary awards, usually based on academic excellence coupled with other criteria including, but not limited to, career pursuits, volunteer activity, and active community participation. Some awards also take financial need into account.
Applying for an Award
If you wish to apply for an award, it is important to follow the application instructions exactly. In the past, students have been disqualified for incomplete or inaccurate submissions. Instructions for each award are included within the award description.

The Albert & Pirkko Karvonen Environment Award is intended to recognize the academic achievement of AU undergraduate program or non-program (unclassified) students who have demonstrated academic excellence. It is awarded annually (July 1 of previous year to June 30 of current year) to the students who have completed and achieved the highest grade in:BIOL205,BIOL207,BIOL345,ENSC200,ENSC495 and ENSC496.
-Minimum course grade of 3.60 or higher is required. Recipients are eligible to receive one award per student per course. Open to any program or non-program (unclassified) students who are Canadian residents.
-Please note that this is a "Nomination" type of award for which there is no application process required. The recipients are determined by an internal selection process and notified directly of their award by the AU Student Awards Unit.

Alberta Historical Resources Foundation Undergraduate Course Scholarships in Heritage Resource Management

Awarded annually (July 1 of previous year to June 30 of the current year) to the students who have completed and achieved the highest standing in each of the following undergraduate level courses:
HERM 301 – Introduction to Heritage Resources Management;HERM 312 – Heritage Research;HERM 322 – Heritage Collections;HERM 327 – Heritage Policy in Canada;HERM 339 – Conservation;HERM 342 – General Principles of Planning Historic Places;HERM 361 – Interpretive Programming;PHIL 334 – Professional Ethics in Heritage Resources Management.
Preference for the above awards competitions will be given to students residing in Alberta and to those students enrolled in the AU Heritage Resources Management programs. Students who qualified for admission into the AU Heritage Resources Management programs through the Alberta Intern program are not eligible for this award. Scholarships available only to students that are Canadian citizens or permanent residents with a Canadian address.

These scholarships are awarded to current Athabasca University (AU) undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program. Students earning credit towards an AU Bachelor degree designation who have achieved a cumulative AU grade point average (GPA) of 3.60 or higher and who have completed at least 15 AU credits are eligible to apply.
Preference will be given to applicants who have proven leadership skills and/or have contributed to their local community via volunteerism and active participation in extracurricular cultural and/or recreational activities. Students are eligible to receive this award once within any five-year period.

Students are only eligible to receive this award once while completing their graduate degree program.
