Attaining eligibility is an important first step in gaining admission to the university, though eligibility alone will not assure admission to UC Santa Barbara. When UCSB cannot admit all eligible applicants it uses standards to select students that are more competitive than the minimum requirements. Minimum Transfer Eligibility Requirements
Requirements for admission are explained at the University of California Admissions page. Students must complete the following requirements for transfer admission, listed as items A and B below.
A. Complete 60 semester or 90 quarter units of transferable college credit with a grade point average of at least 2.4 for California residents and at least 2.8 for nonresidents (no more than 14 semester or 21 quarter units may be taken Pass/Not Pass).
B. Complete the following seven-course pattern requirement, earning a grade of C or better in each:
1. Two courses in English composition.
2. One course in mathematics beyond intermediate algebra, such as college algebra, precalculus or statistics.
3. Four courses from among at least two of the following areas:
· Arts and humanities
· Behavioral and social sciences
· Biological and physical sciences
In addition to this course pattern, students are encouraged to complete as much of the lower-division preparation for their intended major as possible. UCSB transfer applicants are required to apply to a specific major. Prospective applicants who have not identified a major are encouraged to take courses that meet general education requirements while researching majors and trying coursework in potential major subject areas. International Transfer Eligibility
All transfer applicants are considered using the same eligibility requirements and selection process. Whether or not you believe your coursework will be transferable, you will be required to report ALL college and university coursework undertaken in your application. No final decisions on transfer credit will be made until you officially apply and enroll at UCSB. You may also be required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
Foreign Academic Records
When you apply, you must report ALL foreign coursework as it would appear on your foreign academic records. You are required to report your junior/community college or diploma program courses along with all other post-secondary coursework and grades received in your application. However, UCSB generally does not transfer credit from junior/community college programs that are technical or vocational in nature, or that do not lead on to further academic study at a university.
Meeting English Composition Coursework Requirements
One of the admission requirements for all transfer students is two transferable courses in English composition with grades of "C" or better.
If you are applying to transfer directly from a foreign college or university where English is not the language of instruction, you are strongly encouraged to take as much English as your curriculum will allow. It is very unlikely that any of your English courses will transfer to UCSB, but your English preparation will make your application more competitive. You will need to demonstrate your English proficiency with one of the approved examinations.
Determining Course Transferability
· Check to see if your school is recognized by your country’s Ministry of Education (or the appropriate government agency) or a U.S. accrediting agency. The school must be well recognized in order for UCSB to accept any credit.
· You must also be enrolled in a university level academic degree program comparable to a U.S. associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Terminal vocational or technical programs are often not transferable to UCSB, even if taken at recognized institutions.
· Determine if your subjects are similar to any subjects offered at UCSB. We will only consider transfer credit for subjects that are similar to those offered in the UC system. If you cannot find a comparable course at UCSB, then look in that catalogs of the other UC campuses. A course may also be transferable if it is offered somewhere in the UC system.
· Remedial academic subjects, such as English taught as a second language and high school level math, are not transferable.
· Whether or not you believe your coursework will be transferable, you will be required to report all college and university coursework undertaken in your application. No final decisions on transfer credit will be made until you officially apply and enroll at UCSB.

English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school, college or university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful in university studies.
Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum accepted score for admission consideration for the TOEFL is 80 or better on the Internet-based test and 550 or better on the paper-based test.
Proficiency may also be demonstrated with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. The minimum accepted score for the IELTS is 6.5 or better band score (academic modules).
For admission selection, a UC campus may require a score higher than the minimum.
To be considered for admission, the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment. Test results must be sent directly from the testing agency .

Transfer Selection
Comprehensive Review
When UCSB receives applications from more prospective transfer students than can be admitted, a process called comprehensive review is used to select among qualified applicants. Intercampus Transfers
Students interested in transferring to UCSB from another UC campus must apply for admission to UCSB and go through the same process as any other transfer applicant.
To be considered for admission to UCSB, you must leave/have left your previous UC campus in good academic standing or have cleared any bad standing.
International Transfer
Attaining eligibility is an important first step in gaining admission to the university, though eligibility alone will not assure admission to UC Santa Barbara. The College of Letters and Science and the College of Engineering do not accept applicants who have achieved senior-level status (this is applicable only for students who have attended another four-year institution).
Frequently, the number of applications exceeds the number of enrollment spaces available. When this occurs, selection criteria beyond the minimum admission requirements are used to determine admission status.
Students are strongly encouraged to begin taking English composition and mathematics coursework early in their academic careers. Early completion of the minimum requirements for admission makes an applicant more competitive for admission spaces available.
