1. University Entrance Qualification Certificate
In order to apply for a Bachelor program, you will first need a university entrance qualification certificate. This is sometimes abbreviated as HZB. You typically acquire the HZB by successfully completing secondary school or high school.

Since RWTH Aachen maintains a very high level of education, international applicants must have had above average performance in school in order to be accepted to this university. Applications will be rejected that have an average grade of less than 2.5. 2.5 lies exactly in the middle of the German grade system. You can easily check if your average grade is better than 2.5 by finding the middle between the best possible grade and the last passing grade in the grade system used on your transcript. Your average grade must lie above this middle value.

Language Requirements for a Master's
The language of instruction in Master's courses of study at RWTH is German with only a few exceptions. In some Master's courses of study, evidence of foreign language skills must be presented.

3.Certificate of Advanced English, CAE for short
4.First Certificate in English, FCE for short, with a grade of at least B
5.Any official certificate that certifies English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages, CEFR.
6.Placement test of the RWTH Aachen Language Center at the B2 level
Important Information: This language certificate can only be obtained by individuals, who are already enrolled as students at RWTH Aachen.

There are various requirements for admission to a Master course of study. They are explained below:

1. An Initial Qualifying University Degree
The most important requirement for applying to Master's studies is an initial qualifying university degree. Individuals who have never completed university studies before cannot begin with Master's studies. Furthermore, most of the Master courses of study at RWTH Aachen are consecutive. This means that the Bachelor degree provides the subject background and preparation for the Master. Thus, it is not possible to have completed a Bachelor in philosophy but then pursue a Master is mechanical engineering.

Exempt from having to provide evidence for English language skills are all individuals who have completed an educational qualification in the UK, Irland, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or Australia.
Participation in an Englisch-language academic program in one of the countries listed above does not substitute the language test. Certificates and test results from other tests are not accepted either.

In accordance with current edition of Section 67 Paragraph 1 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act, doctoral studies are designated as the ability to conduct independent scientific work through a general academic goal in accordance with Section 58 Paragraph 1 HG. This ability is determined by a scientific written work or dissertatio and further examinations. The doctoral degree is awarded upon completion of doctoral studies.
Enrollment in doctoral studies is restricted to twelve semesters. This period can only be extended with the approval of the doctoral studies board.

Prospective International Doctoral Students
All faculties at RWTH Aachen University are entitled to award doctoral degrees. In order to obtain a doctoral degree, candidates have to conduct an independent research project and publish their results in form of a dissertation (Doktorarbeit). Subsequently, they have to pass an oral examination. A doctoral degree is primarily awarded for producing a substantive, independent research thesis under the supervision of a university professor; lectures and coursework only play a minor role in the dissertation process. Thus doctoral studies at RWTH do not commence with a coursework phase.

"Structured PhD programmes" as offered e.g. by American universities are rather the exception at RWTH Aachen University - PhD projects conducted at RWTH are usually quite different from doctoral programmes based on the Anglo-American model. Only a few Graduate schools and research training groups affiliated with RWTH offer such structured PhD programmes. With the exception of those research schools and training groups, the education of doctoral students is not centrally organised within a graduate school: undergraduate and graduate students alike are taught within the same institutional framework (i.e. within the same faculty). PhD candidates may enrol as students, but they don't have to do so; frequently, doctoral students are employed as research assistants at university departments or institutes.
