Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents and students with any non-U.S. academic records should apply as international applicants.

Application Requirements
International applicants must meet the criteria for freshman or transfer admission. Be sure to review the application checklists for a list of all required materials for a complete application, and remember submit all application materials together. For international students, the Admission Committee will also consider factors such as TOEFL/IELTS scores, national education system and types of institutions attended. You do not need to submit your visa, certification of finances and other supporting international documents for a completed application; however, you will need to submit them if you are admitted to the university.

Remember to use your full legal name as it appears on your passport in your application and all supporting documents so we can issue the necessary immigration documents. Please do not send unnecessary supporting documents such as photographs, recordings or writing samples. The university will not be responsible for keeping them or storing them in your file.

When completing your application, be sure to provide a foreign street address—not a P.O. Box—as your permanent home address so we can issue your I-20 form. Additionally, please ensure that your email address is correct so you can track your application status online.

Application Review Process
The Admissions Committee considers 26 unique factors as part of our holistic review. This process considers all aspects of each applicant’s qualifications and offers admission to the most competitive applicants in order to build a vibrant class of students. When a decision is available, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will send an email to the applicant notifying them that their admission decision can be viewed online.

Applications are considered complete when the online application and all required documents have been submitted. All materials must be postmarked by the application deadline for consideration. Please note that it may take up to five days after submission for you to be able to view the status of your application and any submitted documents online. It is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm receipt of all application materials.

Choosing a Major
When you apply to Maryland, your preferred major is not considered in whether or not you are admissible to Maryland. You cannot indicate double-major preferences or minors at the time of application; after you are admitted, you can work with the academic advisor in your college to declare these preferences.

Certain majors are very popular and require a limit on the number of students they can accommodate. These majors are known as Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP). Admitted students who selected a Limited Enrollment Program as their major are then reviewed by the specific program to determine admission to that major. While the majority of students are admitted to their preferred major, some LEP applicants may not be. Students who are admitted to Maryland but not their preferred LEP major are placed in Letters & Sciences, where they will work with an advisor to meet the gateway requirements to earn admission to that major. Admitted students who did not select an LEP major are admitted directly to the major indicated on their application. All major decisions are included in the applicant’s admission decision letter.

English Language Proficiency
If English is not your native language—regardless of your citizenship—you must provide the university with verification of your proficiency in English. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will consider all materials submitted in the application package to determine your level of English proficiency. Have an official report of your scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the appropriate deadline.

To assist in matching your official scores with your application, you may submit copies of your test score reports with your application materials. Please note that your English proficiency test scores are not considered official until we receive them directly from the testing agency.

Financial Certification
If you are admitted to the University of Maryland and hold or intend to seek an F-1 Student or J-1 Exchange Visitor visa, you must complete the Certification of Finances and provide bank statements that demonstrate sufficient funds to cover expenses. We do not need this documentation until after you are offered admission to the university.
