QS Best Student Cities ranking: Joint 26th
The capital of Canada, Ottawa was a new entrant in the QS Best Student Cities index in 2016, and makes an impressive leap of 23 places this year to rank joint 26th alongside Prague.
A diverse and dynamic city, Ottawa is also multilingual, with many residents fluent in both English and French. Ottawa is home to the Rideau Canal, the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, which is also a world heritage site. There are countless other cultural and historical spots of interest to explore, including the most-visited museum in Canada, the Canadian Museum of History. The city is also home to the impressive neo-gothic parliament building ‘Centre Block’.
The two top universities in Ottawa are both ranked within the top 600 in the world, with the University of Ottawa at joint 291st in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017. As well as ranking highly in the Desirability category of the QS Best Student Cities index, Ottawa receives a high score for Student Mix, with a high percentage of international students, reflecting the vibrant and multi-cultural study environment on offer.
Ottawa also has the distinction of ranking 1st in the entire index for the new Student View category, which can at least partly account for its impressive leap in the Best Student Cities index this year. Ottawa’s perfect score in this indicator reflects the city’s lively student life, diversity and friendliness. It received praise in our student survey, with one respondent saying: “I love the opportunities and the diversity as well as the student-centered culture” while another commented, “The quality of education is one of the top in Canada.”

Prague
QS Best Student Cities ranking: Joint 26th
Prague continues to improve its position in the QS Best Student Cities index, climbing 13 places this year. The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague boasts three universities ranked among the world’s best. Its leading institution, Charles University, is joined in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017 by the Czech Technical University in Prague and the University of Economics, Prague.
Though still establishing itself as an international study destination, Prague is already a staple in the list of top European city-break destinations, thanks to its striking castle, UNESCO-listed medieval Old Town, and thriving arts, museums and nightlife. In recent years, it’s also been recognized as an international innovation hub, ranked 29th in the Innovation Cities Index.
The city’s large and internationally diverse student community gives Prague a strong score in the Student Mix category of the index. It also appears in the top 50 for Affordability; while international tuition fees are in the mid-range, Prague is a less expensive place to live than many of the other entrants in the QS Best Student Cities.
Prague achieves its strongest score in the new Student View indicator – coming second behind Ottawa. This new category reflects students’ own views of their experiences, and in our student survey Prague received plenty of praise for its affordability, diversity and friendliness. When asked to name the best things about studying in Prague, one student said: “It´s very affordable and comfortable to live in. Great cuisine.” Another highlighted the “Friendly atmosphere and great nightlife.”

New Zealand’s largest city places 28th in the QS Best Student Cities index this year, with a particularly strong score in the Student Mix category, thanks to its large and diverse student community, combined with an inclusive and tolerant culture.
Other high scores for Auckland come in the Desirability and Employer Activity categories, showing that it’s both an in-demand and comfortable place to live, and a favored recruiting ground for graduate employers. Its weak spot is in the Affordability indicator, due to comparatively high tuition fees and living costs. But don’t let the costs dissuade you – the city has plenty to offer in return, including two universities featured in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017.
Auckland is particularly well-known for its multicultural diversity, and (like most of New Zealand), for the wide range of adrenaline-fueled activities on offer in and around the local area – climbing, jet-skiing, diving, snowboarding, sailing, canyoning, surfing – pretty much anything you can think of. This is definitely a good choice for students who like to unwind by getting active! There’s also plenty of culture on offer, from classical music to the huge annual Pasifika Festival.

In the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, China’s two highest entries are Tsinghua University (joint 24th) and Peking University (39th) – both based in Beijing. Also within the world’s top 500 are the city's Beijing Normal University, Beihang University and Renmin (People’s) University of China.
Beijing still has a little way to go before its universities catch up with Singapore’s NUS or NTU (ranked 12th and 13th in the world), but its leading institution does beat Hong Hong’s highest-ranked university, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (27th), consolidating its place among Asia’s hottest study-abroad destinations. With notably strong ratings from domestic and international employers, Beijing’s universities are also producing graduates highly valued in the workplace.
Beijing is certainly not a destination for those looking for a ‘small-town’ feel. But if you like the idea of studying in a city with strong international career opportunities, while keeping a finger to the pulse of one of the world’s fastest-developing countries, then this dynamic metropolis at the center of the world’s most populous nation could be for you.
The city receives its highest score in the Employer Activity category of the QS Best Student Cities index, reflecting its strength as a recruitment ground for graduate employers. Beijing also received praise in our student survey, with one respondent commenting: “This city is research-oriented and everywhere you will see science and ideas.” Another said, “I can meet different people coming near and afar. They have the best quality education faculty and facilities here.”
