When Frida Kahlo's paintings were on show in London, a poet described her paintings as “a ribbon(絲帶)around a bomb”. Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time. Sadly, she is actually a much bigger name today than she was during her time.
Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City, Kahlo suffered from polio(小兒麻痹癥)at the age of seven. Her spine(脊柱)became bent as she grew older. Then, in 1925, her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident. Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but noting was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Kahlo taught herself to paint.
In 1929, she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist. Rivera’s strong influences on Kahlo’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.
Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and1940s, even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953. For more than a decade after her death in 1954, Kahlo’s works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.

A. a far better artist B. a much more famous person

A. back injuries B. her bent spine
C. polio D. the operations she had

54. What is author’s attitude toward Kahlo?
A. Devotion (熱愛(ài)) B. Encouragement C. Worry D. Sympathy(同情)
55. Which of the following statements is True?
A. Kahlo suffered from polio because of a school-bus accident.
B. Kahlo was not only a painter but also a poet.
C. Kahlo’s works became famous after her death.
D. All Kahlo’s works were affected by her husband.

There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us tide through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your comer store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (禮貌) to speak to others that are around you.
I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?
Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.
56. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that ____________.

A. keeping silent B. speaking loud
C. laughing hard D. explaining carefully
59. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to __________.
A. talk about his own understanding of humor
B. encourage people to be humorous in daily life
C. introduce a practical way to get through daily life
D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life
60. What is the author' s attitude towards the present world?
A. Indifferent B. Positive C. Satisfied D. Critical

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not try to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another do does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to make a general statement about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.
61. What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?
A. Joy. B. Politeness. C. Love. D. Thankfulness.
62. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can ___ .
A. show friendliness to strangers B. be used in the wrong places
C. be used to hide true feelings D. show personal habits
63. In formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do
because_______.
A. Japanese do not experience rich emotions
B. Both Japanese and Americans enjoy different cultures
C. Americans have rich emotional experiences
D. Americans often smile in the wrong places
64. What should we do before attempting to “read” people?
A. Learn about their relations with others.
B. Figure out what they will do next.
C. Find out about their past experience.
D. Understand their cultural backgrounds.
65. What would be the best title for the test?
A. Facial Expressiveness B. Smiles and Relationship
C. Cultural Differences D. Habits and Emotions
D
Living in the wild can be hard. Finding food and staying safe aren’t easy. Each day, animals struggle to survive in their habitats. Not all animals get by on their own. Some animals form a close partnership with other kinds of animals. These pairings are called symbiotic (共生的) relationships.
In a symbiotic relationship, the animals depend on each other. One animal helps the other meet its needs. Sounds good, right? Not always. Some animals are not very kind to their partners. In some cases, one animal meets its needs but hurts its partner. Take ticks, for example. These insects suck blood to live. To get blood, they attach themselves to other kinds of animals. Ticks can pass germs that cause disease instead of helping their hosts.
In other relationships, animals don’t treat their partners so poorly .Both animals benefit from living with the other animals.
Small animals called cleaner shrimps have found a way of helping fish at coral reefs(珊瑚礁). As their name suggests, the shrimps clean the fish. They hang out at what scientists call a cleaning station. A fish stops by. Then a shrimp climbs onto the fish and even steps into the fish’s mouth. The shrimp uses its tiny claws to pick stuff off the fish’s body. That can include dead skin, tiny pieces of food, and wee creatures that can hurt the fish. The fish gets a nice cleaning. The shrimp enjoys a tasty meal of fish trash.
Small birds called plovers are also in the cleaning business. They have big customers—crocodiles. Crocs have long snouts (鼻子) filled with sharp teeth. Cleaning them is tricky. When a croc opens its mouth, the plover hops right in. The croc does not snap its snout shut. Instead,it lets the plover eat small, harmful animals attached to the crocodile’s teeth. The plover gets an easy meal while the croc gets clean teeth.

Possible version:
A young man called Low-carbon Brother became a hit one on the Internet in 2011, who suggests using less energy in our daily life. For example, he always picks up some waste paper on the street and uses the blank side to write something and while he is watching TV, he always turns off the light. Besides, he goes to work by bike instead of driving. Some people think that what he is doing is just a show and impractical. But as far as I am concerned, I strongly support his idea and his behavior because although what he is doing has no huge effect on global warming, he at least can enjoy a healthy life.
