Of particular note is the University’s performance in the academic reputation indicator, with Victoria recording the biggest rise in this area of any New Zealand university.
The reputation of institutions among international academics accounts for 40 percent of the overall QS rankings score. Victoria’s academic reputation rank improved significantly from 201 last year to 173 this year, continuing a steady increase that has been occurring in recent years.
“Our global standing amongst the top two percent of the world’s 18,000 universities continues to increase thanks to the outstanding reputation of our academics and the quality of our research and teaching,” says Victoria’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford.
“This is a very satisfying result given the increasing investment in universities worldwide—particularly in Asia—that far exceeds that of New Zealand universities.”
Professor Guilford says Victoria’s ranking in the latest QS results is important for Wellington and for New Zealand.
“High quality universities like Victoria play a key role in attracting the calibre of staff and students that cities need to thrive and prosper.
“We are proud of the contribution we make to the success of New Zealand’s capital city.”

Victoria Business School is one of an elite group of commerce faculties worldwide that hold the Triple Crown of international accreditations of EQUIS, AACSB (Business) and AMBA.
Our students
Victoria University has over 21,000 students, including over 3,400 international students from more than 100 countries. In 2016, Victoria awarded 5,869 qualifications at graduation ceremonies.
Staff, schools and faculties
Victoria has over 2,100 full-time equivalent staff and over 1,000 of those are involved in teaching and research. About half our academic staff were born outside New Zealand.
We have 10 faculties, eight of which conduct teaching and research—each faculty is divided into schools.
Campuses and research institutes
Victoria has three main campuses in Wellington. We also have premises in Auckland and we teach a joint programme from premises at a partner university in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.
