rather
1)注意下列詞的程度
a bit/ a little→slightly→rather→much→completely→quite
2)rather 修飾形容詞加名詞時，若有冠詞a 或an , 則rather 在冠詞前、后皆可。如：It was rather a cold day . = It was a rather cold day.
3)rather和fairly
rather表示不接受性，為否定意義;fairly 表示接受性，為肯定意義。如：
It’s rather cold today .(不愉快)
It’s fairly warm today .(心中舒服)
4) rather +比較級;rather/ much/ far+too+adj./adv, 而fairly,quite ,very 則不能。如：I did rathre better in the exam. That’s rather too difficult.
5) rather than 而不是 如：
He , rather than you, is to be punished . 是他而不是你要受懲罰。
I decided to write rather than (to)telephone.我決定寫信而不是打電話。
還可用于下面兩種結(jié)構(gòu)。
① would do sth . rather than do sth .= would rather do sth. than do sth .寧愿做某事而不愿做某事。
② prefer to do sth . rather than do sth .(意義同上)
