在書面語中，條件從句可以不用連詞if，而將謂語中的過去式were，had或should等移至主語之前。如：
(1)Were you in my position, you would do the same. 假如你處在我的地位，你也會這樣干的。
(2)Had he been in your position, he'd probably have done the same. 假如我處在你的地位，他可能也會這樣干的。
(3)Should they attack us, we'll wipe them out completely. 假如他們進攻我們，我們就把他們徹底消滅干凈。
(4)Had I time, I would come. 假如我有時間，我會來的。
(5)I will go, should it be necessary. 假如有必要，我會去的。
[注]在虛擬語態(tài)中，可移至主語之前的除were，had和should外，偶爾還有did和would，could等。如：
①There are other articles, to which, did time permit, we might draw attention. 還有其它一些文章，如時間允許，我們還可以提請注意。
②Would space allow, I should like to quote the notice in full. 如有篇幅，我會引用通知全文的。
③“Joyce!” and Joyce would have been astonished could she have heard his voice. “喬伊斯!”喬伊斯如聽到他的叫聲，她會吃驚的。
條件從句與結(jié)果主句所表的時間不一致
當條件從句與結(jié)果主句所表的時間不一致時，虛擬語氣的形式應作相應的調(diào)整。如：
(1)If I had spoken to him yesterday, I should know what to do now. 假如昨天我對他說了，現(xiàn)在我就知道該怎么辦了。
(2)You would be much better now if you had taken my advice. 假如你接受了我的意見，你現(xiàn)在就會好得多。
(3)If father hadn't sent me, I shouldn't be here. 假如父親沒有叫我來，我現(xiàn)在就不會在這里。
(4)If he knew this, it would have had to be by accident. 假如他已知道此事，那一定會是偶然的。
如條件從句用if I were…，結(jié)果主句則可用表任何時間的虛擬形式。如：
(5)If I were not busy, I would have come. 假如我不忙，我就會去了。(were表過去)
(6)If I were you, I would go. 假如我是你，我會去的。(were表現(xiàn)在)
