    英國《獨立報》（The Independent ）現(xiàn)屬于Tony O'Reilly的Independent News & Media集團，是英國最資淺的日報。它于1986年由原《每日電訊報》的三個記者創(chuàng)辦。第一周發(fā)行量高達50萬份，一個月后穩(wěn)定在33萬份。80年代后期由于桑創(chuàng)辦人不和、資金不足，報紙困難重重。1994年起鏡報集團和愛爾蘭獨立新聞和媒介集團（Independent News &Media PLC）聯(lián)合控股《獨立報》，1998年后，后者成為《獨立報》的唯一老板。2003年9月《獨立報》在英國大報中率先推出全盤化的小報版本。大獲成功，從2004年5月開始徹底轉型為小報，至2007年8月為止的發(fā)行量為240,116份，現(xiàn)在發(fā)行量約為25萬份。該報自稱在政治上獨立。惠特姆·史密斯親自出任該報主編。1990年4月，他被英國電視節(jié)目“報刊摘要”評為1989年度“最佳主編”。和保守派的泰晤士報及進步派的衛(wèi)報相比，《獨立報》算是比較性質中立的報紙。
    而《完整的大學指南》通過對全英國116所大學的9項指標，包括研究水平、學生滿意度、入學標準、教學設備投入、學位等級以及就業(yè)前景等進行評估，因而得出評比結果。它具有無可爭辯的權威性，針對英國113所大學進行實時在線互動，確保指南排名依據(jù)的可靠性和權威性。內容囊括了英國大學綜合排名和62個專業(yè)科目排名的詳細情況。
    《完整大學指南》英國大學排行榜與《衛(wèi)報》《泰晤士報》、英國高等教育研究機構QS各自發(fā)布的大學排行榜并列為英國最有影響力的大學排行榜，是英國學校、研究機構和學生的重要參考。
